Pumpkin neck checker / cutter mandrel compatability

Hello,

Does anyone know/remember if other mandrels are compatible with Nielson Pumpkin cutter or even better checker? From what I read neck madnrels and checkers mandrels were either same or .001 difference in diameter. I am just curious of say Sinclair/PMA mandrel are compatible also?

You can use other mandrel for checker, not turner. Pumpkin Turner mandrel is specially cut (shaft and base are off center).

Is the shaft off center from mandrel base or was it the actual turner base had an off-center hole for the mandrel? I remember reading just that as I can't see how the first tick mark can align exactly with the mandrel's appropriate off-center side. At any rate so the checker can use which manufacturers mandrel?

If I remember correctly from when I checked the neck turner mandrel in the lathe it gives you .010 of movement. The stem that the neck goes on is ground eccentric to the base.

Thank you, that is very useful info. I knew about the eccentricity piece and for some reason thought the tool itself was drilled eccentrically to the mandrel, of course an eccentric mandrel makes much more sense. I guess that flat where the fixating screw goes indexes it to the upper piece of the tool consistently so that turning the piece from the first tick mark moves the mandrel closer. Thanks again. I still need to know the NECK CHECKER mandrel compatability

That is exactly correct. Sorry can’t help with the checker as I do not own one. Good luck, I’m sure someone will be along with an answer.
