Pulling FMJs and Reloading with Expanding Bullets

Has anyone purchased military type .223 ammo, pulled the FMJ bullets and reloaded with an expanding bullet? Just pull the bullet and using the powder charge in the casing, replaced it with a varmint bullet of the same weight. You could then sell the FMJs. For use in a bolt gun.

ABSOLUTELY!
just like highmaster said.. just be careful pulling the bullets so you don't take the neck too far out of round( especially if you are competing). The first 600yard ammo for my service rifle was don't this way with 75 and 80 amax projectiles. I was pulling 77s. One of my mentors referred to it as "Mexican match" loading

I did pretty well with those rounds and it got better as I got better at handloading.
FWIW I pull M80 ammo and reuse the components for training and other applicants. I use a hornady cam bullet puller and like it quite a bit. If you are pulling surplus and the projectile is stuck in there pretty good with lots of sealant (tar) freeze the rounds and then pull. the brass seams to break free of the bullet much easier.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Doc

Just wondering, but could a guy buy a metplat trimmer that would work on loaded ammo? Then trim deep enuf to create a hollow point of some sort? Just thinking out loud. But if it would work I have all sorts of fmj's I'd do it to

Am I missing something here? You would lose neck tension, at the least it would be all over the place. You can pull the bullets, but you should dump the powder and resize the cases first. This would at least get you consistent neck tension. I would think they would be more accurate.

This statement is dead nuts for many reasons. Dump the powder and work up a new load. Neck size the cases, chamfer the inside of the case mouth.

Of course, all this is done for the sake of accuracy. If you just want a more effective Zombie killing load, then Sleeze by with the easiest method you like the best.
