First of all some recognition for this site. I just had a great time at a long-range class that couldn't have happened without the knowledge I have picked up here and a very healthy dose of luck.
I attended two snipercentral courses last week. The 308RPR load or system I had worked up went sideways and started to open up badly. Out of time, I pulled out my backup rifle (a 223AI AR) and ran the basic course out to and including 1000yd. The wind was a bear to deal with at long range.
I had a 300WM working up, with an initial OCW test in 0.3gr increments. Using results from that test in the evenings after classes and knowledge picked up from this forum I made a SWAG and was pleased with the results. Very pleased.
The load was H1000, Hornady brass, CCI BR2's, and Berger 210 VLD's.
The initial OCW had a goodish node at 77.8gr (5/8 moa) to 78.1gr (1/2 moa) with seating at 0.003 from the lands. Not wanting to take the second class with increasing wind and up/down humidity conditions and a little-bitty 77gr pill I gathered as much data as I could here and made some educated guesses.
I came back to the reloading room and neck turned 150 pieces to 0.003, loaded 78hrs of H1000, seated 0.003 into the lands, and banged out all 150 that night staying up until 3 a.m. Sighting in the next morning showed 1/4moa!
I had to find velocity using Strelok and known hold over the next day as range increased and at the end of the day had this:
Hornady brass
CCI BR2
H1000 78gr
Berger 210gr VLD
Neck turned to 0.03 tension
3.570OAL, or 3.900 using a Hornady headspace comparator
3020fps at 5200 ft elevation, 85F, 35% humidity
This rifle shot like a laser for me. It is a R700 with a factory 24" tube, and I managed to pull a SWAG and shoot to 1400 with 10+ gusting crosswinds.
I would have never pulled it off two years ago. Thanks to this site and all of the knowledge given and archived by the members here!
BTW, all shooting from prone, off the bipod, with a rear bag. I will need to do a bench test with solid rest be for I go further.
