PTG firing pin question

I decided to see if a new spring and firing pin would work for a used Rem 40XR 223 AI rifle I have. Supposedly the old firing pin and spring were PTG. But when I got the PTG replacements, the new sprng was a bit short and the new firing pin wouldn't fit into the cocking piece as the hole didn't match up at all. I'd have to replace the cocking piece as well (basically means getting the full firing pin assembly).

Would using a new firing pin assembly that's not identical to the original be problematic? I'm new to these guns and so am confused by this.

Did you turn the pin 180deg and see if it lines up there

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're asking here. The location of the hole on the firing pin only lined up imperfectly on either side of the hole.

lay the old pin beside the new pin, take a 3/32 drill bit and run through booth pins to see if there is a visible difference from holes to end of pins. If it looks to be the same, take some emory cloth and polish end of new pin. sometimes the slightest bur will prevent pin from entering as far as needed for alignment.
