ptg carbide reamer pilot flutes??

I purchased a ptg carbide reamer and it came with a fluted pilot that is actually longer than a standard pilot.

For starters the flutes in the pilot worry me as they may drop into one of the lands and potentialy ruin the camber. I am guessing they are for a front flushing system??

Secondly we have a stock of pilots that suit their standard hss reamers that now wont fit my new reamer :-((

The question is what do you guys do?? Have you had any issues with the fluted pilots and would it be feasable to make up a spacer to use stamdard pilots so we have a selection of sizes??

You have nothing to worry about, the flutes will stay well inside the rate of twist on your barrel keeping the flutes on the bush central on the lands to which they are contacting.

I wondered the same thing with my first carbide reamer. In the end the worries were for nothing. The carbide reamer pilot bushings are .75" rather than the standard .5" long which make it pretty nice as you can prebore to a deeper depth and still be able to pick up the bore with the longer pilot. One tip; keep a few extra "c" clips around for the pilots because they are easy to lose when changing bushings. I always change them over a magnetic tray so they change go far if they fall.

Another reason not to depend on a bushing for chambering.

butch ive been around guns and have a fairly practical outlook on things but I haven't seen anything about chambering without a pilot???

I drill, taper bore, and ream. I want my reamer to follow a hole that is concentric with the lathes bearings, not a wandering bore. If you drill, indicate the throat area, and taper bore to the throat, the reamer will follow the taper bored hole.
