PRS22 --- Anyone Playing

Putting this here as the rimfire guys seem more focused on BR. If I messed up I'll move it.

Anywhoo...

I have a local range that does a PRS22 match on a monthly basis. I'm thinking about dipping my toes in.

To start, I'll run the 10/22 that I'm "building" albeit with different glass than planned. I have a 3-15 Leupold with a 'tree reticle that should get me in the door. I'm gonna run cheap ammo for a bit and have no cares if I win, place, or lose. I'm just gonna go and have some fun. I want to start to understand how the stages are built and how competing looks.

FWIW, I am a shooter and have been a builder and reloader. I understand most of the base level stuff regarding how rifles and rimfire work. I'm interested in the game aspect of it and how to progress from an equipment standpoint.

Does anyone on here engage in that game?
Thoughts on a budget-open setup? I'm between a Bergara B14r and a CZ457. No 401k gun here, just something that is a solid shooter with good aftermarket.
Thoughts on glass? I'm a bit of a snob but can be dissuaded.
Zero at 50 or 100?
Chassis vs. stock? I'm much more a stock guy and really like McMillan stuff. I've had chassis systems in the past and I don't love them. I am open to change.
Barrel lengths?
1:16 seems to work fine. Does that sound right?
Anything else?

This is all future planning to keep my mind engaged. Nothing is happening at the moment. Lots of research to do.

Been shooting .22 matches before there was a PRS22 part of the PRS. About 8 years now and they are a lot of fun. PRS22 is not the only .22 game. NRL22/X, MARS and many outlaw .22 matches out there. All basically the same for what you need for gear and stages.

A solid bolt gun that is accurate and reliable with good balance for props
A good scope with 25-36x top end that has a good reticle and is FFP.
Good ammo
Good data to 300-400 yards
A good shooting bag and bipod

Then go have fun.

Buying used in .22 is not a problem either as barrels rarely burn out like centerfire rifles.

Check out Josh youtube " Pursuit of Accuracy" for extensive content. One message is a very heavy rifle, especially barrel, is your friend
I've seen him. I'll give him a go. He seems to be the one everyone points to.

Thank you. Appreciate it.

Bergara or CZ would be my recommendation for “budget”

B14R just for the compatibility with R700 triggers and chassis.

Otherwise, I think the CZ457 is an outstanding rifle. My son’s will keep up with my Vudoo.

I also like the CZ because the ease of replacing the barrel. I suggest 24+ inches and straight taper. The most important reason is to get the rifle to balance about 4-6 inches in front of the magazine. Setting the rifle on a bag on a prop and have it self balance makes it a lot easier

Zero at 50.

Much appreciated.

Get the right shooting bag(s) to go along with your gear. Armageddon gear schmedium heavy fill, among other similar bags will be a good start.

Learn how to build positions that work for you, and how to manipulate a stage to work for you. Not everyone does this game the same way and that’s hard to grasp for a lot of newer shooters.

I shoot a Bergara action with a 22” straight taker barrel. Main reason for me was the weight and balance. The rifle should balance a few inches in front of the mag well.

Longer (20” and above) will typically give you slightly better results in the consistency department with speeds and SD numbers which of course helps a guy down range quite a bit.

Big thing that guys need to do is go to a match and try stuff.

If you show up to a match with no gear and talk to the MD he’ll find someone there that will be borrowing you everything you need for the day, ammo included. Give the guy $20 bucks for the ammo when you’re done and do that a half dozen times to see what you like.

700 platforms would be my recommendation for an action to dart with but CZ And Tikka both have great rifles for this game.

Buy the best ammo you can afford it justify to spend money on and practice positions daily. Shoot paper targets at 50 yards. 1” dots. From as many positions as you can. A step ladder works well for this. Just keep moving up and down the rungs.

It’s addicting for sure. I enjoy more than centefire PRS these days.

Awesome advice.
I have 50 in the back yard so can practice a little more easily than others. I appreciate the advice.

If I had to do it over again I would go the CZ457 route. Womfat and Pursuit of Accuracy have plenty of content on mods they've made/recommend. I'd start with a CZ457 MTR installing the Yodave trigger spring kit, Area419 scope base and DPG Talon Extractor. Next up would probably be the L3i drop-in barrel although the Lilja barrel gets a lot of good press too; Modacam makes a barrel everybody seems to want but is pricey and has months long wait times. Somewhere along the way I'd throw it into a chassis. Haven't given it much thought though.

I have a CZ457 with a Bartlein and Boyds Varmint stock with adj cheekpiece. 8 oz trigger, Area419 30 MOA base, Vortex Venom 5-25x. I only feed it SK standard, Rifle Match, or Long Range and it shoots all 3 very well. Average 5 shot groups are just under 1 MOA at 100 yards and a ragged hole at 50. I've taken it out to 500 yards on 20" steel and done a few local PRS matches. I usually fall in the top 25-50% range. Not bad considering it's nowhere close to a dedicated PRS rifle and the guys I shoot with do it every weekend. I zero at 50 yards.

I started with a CZ457 MTR VMT, it was plenty accurate with SK rifle match I eventually moved up to a Vudoo 360 in a chassis this season. My scores did not jump way up but the new set up is easier to work with on the barricades. The 457 is in the classifieds now. I had just as much fun with the 457 as the Vudoo. It is really fun!
