PRS choice

What‘s some of the things you take into consideration when choosing not only The caliber but the gun and scope for PRS competition.

You want a cartridge that is easy to tune using available components, has low recoil for spotting impacts yourself, and isn't going to burn out a barrel too quickly. Common choices these days are the 6mmBR based cartridges (6BRA, Dasher, etc.) or 6.5x47 Lapua-based cartridges (6mm GT, 6-6.5x47Lapua).

As far as the gun, you may consider an action where you can get pre-fit barrels so you can change them yourself. You want to choose a stock that can accept rails for a QD bipod/tripod mount and possibly weights for balancing it out. You'll want a brake to aide in spotting your own shots, and you'll want a heavy rifle up around 20 lbs. A detachable magazine is a must.

For optics, you'll want to go with miliradian adjustments and reticle subtensions because that is the unit most every one else will be using. You want enough power to read mirage, but most of your shooting will be between 12-16x. You also want to use FFP reticles because you don't know what power you'll be on and you want your holds to remain true. 5-25x, 6-24x, 7-35x, and similar are most common magnification ranges.

Do what the winners are doing:

Defiance/Impact/GAP action, Manners stock or MDT chassis, Area 419 Arca-Swiss rail, Area 419 self-timing break, Trigger-Tech Diamond trigger, a Bartlein or Brux barrel in M24 contour, a Kahles 5-25x optic, Atlas bipod, and chamber it in 6mm GT.

In addition to the equipment posted, consider these options:

Zermatt TL3 or Origin
MPA Matrix Pro chassis
APA Fat bastard muzzle brake
Bix N Andy triggers
Heavy Varmint contour or straight 1.25 contour barrel
Vortex Razor Gen III 6-36 mrad
Accu-Tac or MDT Cyke-Pod bipod

It’s very important to have a rifle balance in front of the first few inches of a mag well/barricade stop. You’ll be using a bag (wiebad/Armageddon) on props and you want your rifle to balance so you aren’t fighting rear weight or forward weight while already in unstable positions and possibly unstable props.

100% component choices don’t matter as much as long as your choosing high quality components. What I mean is brux, bartlein, benchmark, krieger, ks arms, ibi are all great barrels. Choose a top. Tier action, and barrel and smith. Stocks and chassis are very dependent on what fits you and is most comfortable. Some prefer a chassis like mpa or mdt and others prefer a stock feel like a manners or foundation. Your not going go wrong as well as it fits and your comfortable. Chassis are more ergonomic and adjustable but not necessarily a bonus if a manners fits you fine.

Calibers like mentioned above is best to choose something that isn’t terrible high on recoil, and super easy to tune and stay in tune. A straight 6br is a phenomenal choice. So accurate and easy to tune. The dasher and bra are great as well. If reloading isn’t in your books then a gt or the creeds (6.5 ans 6)

Balance is more important than weight in my opinion. Yes a heavier rifle helps mitigate recoil, but a good brake does that and a heavy barrel also does that. Trying to balance a rifle on a barricade/trap while you're moving and trying to get in to a weird position add difficulty that you just don't want/need.

The hardest part for me isn't the shooting and getting impacts, it's getting in to a good position and then quickly acquiring the target. So scope setup is key. Make sure the ring/mount height is set for your natural position. Make sure it's set right for your eye relief too when you're behind it.

The number 1 thing I take into consideration is enjoyment.
A year and April you posted about PRS, you weren't interested then about competing in a Match. Are you interested now? I'm just curious. I haven't shot one in over a year. I miss it at times.

Right now I’m more interested in learning about it than shooting it. And I’ve learned that sometimes you can ask questions about one thing, and you can use those answers in another thing. And it let’s people here share their knowledge which I enjoy more than the Labradar vs. Garmin post among other things
and yes the questions I ask may get answers that others can use

I do the same thing.
