Proud Dad moment, I need to share!

My boy (who is 11) and I spent some time at the range on Saturday. I set him up behind the gas gun, shooting 69 SMKs over some Varget. No rest, just bags, front and rear. He put up this three shot group at 100 yards on a steel pig. It is a 3/8-16 bolt in the picture. I figure the group is about .650 center to center. This is his first time shooting my AR. Up top is a Leupold VX-R 1.25-4. My only regret is I didn't snap any pictures of him shootin.

Excellent shooting for a youngster. I hope he is able to continue to build on this in a school or 4 H style program. Would deffinately like to see him compete and build his skills. Of course you might have to take on another job if he gets in deep enough. Wish I had his eyes.

I had my soon to be 11 year old grandson grounghog hunting last evening. He bagged hi 3rd and 4th of the year. One at 142 Yds. and the other at 220 Yds., both head shots. The best part of the hunt was between shots when he said, "PopPop this is so much fun and it is so quiet and peaceful out here".
He's shooting a M7 Rem that I built for him in 20 Tactical.

Thanks SwampBuck. I didn't know the 4H offered those types of programs. I will look into.

I know how you feel, Eddie. I wanted to shoot before we got there, but after I got the boy set up and shooting, I was content just to watch and help him out. Very gratifying to say the least.

Our youngest daughter started small bore and Sporter air rifle with the 4H. She went on to Precision air and 3P and Prone small bore and was successful enough at the state and national level to go to Colorado Springs for the Olympic Development Team try outs. She also had a scholarship offer for shooting. All of that was 3 grandchildren ago but she did shoot the prone small bore nationals in Indiana last summer. The oldest daughter worked for a number of years in the membership department at the NRA and the wife has shot some Hi-Power and informal F class but prefers ground hogs and Bambi hunting.

Point being, the shooting sports are a great way to have one heck of a lot of family oriented fun. And yes, if your grandson gets interested in competitive shooting two jobs may not be enough to fund the activity but it will be worth it.

What kind of 'child abuse' are you teaching that granchil Eddie? :) Give him his video game and cell phone and be a part of the majority. Them kids aren't supposed to enjoy the "quiet and peaceful" outdoors! Betting he had/has a good teacher, therefore a great student!!

Know exactly how you gents feel. My son is 31 now but remember those proud moments when he was younger and what he learned. Makes ya swell a little! Can't seem to get him really into shooting and it had been at least 3yrs since he shot a rifle. He and I went out to a small dog town on Father's Day for a bit. Have a great shooting old Varmint Special 223 threaded for my suppressor. Only head and occasionally a shoulder shot from 50yds to 265ish but he went 42 for 45. He has always seemed to have the knack, just not a huge interest in shooting. I won't give up though! lol

Edit to add.... To the OP, that is darn good shooting by that young fella on an AR platform. It takes a lot of concentration for me to shoot decent groups on an AR platform as I am so used to bolt guns! For his age and experience thus far he has 'the knack' for sure!!! :)

That's some really good shooting by your son Sir, heck I need to take lessons lol. Good to hear this with the day and time we live in. Thanks for sharing brother. I have a seven year old girl that loves to shoot. Ill be honest I was worried almost sick when we first started shooting that she wouldn't take to it but she did thank Goodness.

Great shooting. I can understand how proud you are. Every weekend I take my 11 year old Grand Son Shooting. This last week end I had a 10 year boy Shoot his gun at 600 YD at a 5'' steel gong. He banged it two time in a row . ;D .
Keep him in a gun that doesn't Recoil . You have a Winner. ;D
WE had a Dirty Bird shoot a month ago. Cory shot a.0908 5.shot group at 300 yds for a club record. ;D
Remember take a Boy or a Girl shooting. Larry

Terrific shooting, wish I had had a tutor when I was that age. +1 for 4H, my nephew started out shooting trap with an old single shot, now he bests me every time we meet. He loves my browning o/u, shoots it better than me also. Might make a good Christmas gift one day. The future looks bright indeed!
