ProteKtor Front & Rear Rests???

I POSTED THIS IN A DIFFERENT FORUM AND GOT NO RESPONSES SO THOUGHT I’D TRY IT HERE.

I’ve been shooting precision benchrest at my local indoor club using a modified Caldwell Lead Sled 2. (Don’t laugh it worked LOL) I do add 20lbs of weight in the frame for added stability. I know it’s not the best but it worked for me to see if I wanted to move forward with a better rest. I’m limited on funds so I’d like your thoughts on the Protector front and rear rest combo sets. Here is the link to the one I’m looking at: https://protektormodel.com/collections/complete-rest-sets/products/aluminum-rest-set-with-1f-13bf-60
Any info on these would be helpful.

Just for your info I’ve attached a couple of pix of what I made out of the old Lead Sled. I’m a retired tool and die maker and while I have a couple of lathes, I do not have any Bridgeports anymore otherwise I’d just make one for myself.

My other thought is if I got the Protector set and I wasn’t happy with it I could possibly modify it myself.

Anyway thanks in advance for your thoughts and information!

I use a Caldwell br front rest. I melted lead and added it into bottom side of the legs. Added more weight. I do not compete against anyone but myself and friends

Wouldn’t hesitate buying anything I wanted from Protektor. Have their bags and rest. Even the steel plate option.
Aside from excellent products, they are great folks to deal with. Have a question, just call and it will be answered.
Thank you M-61! Appreciate the comments! I do plan to call and talk with them very soon!

The Protektor front rest will make for a solid set-up. I would highly recommend getting it with the windage top so you don't have to spend again later. A windage top is 100% required and worth it for BR. My .02 cents.
Thank you for this! When I contact them I’ll ask about the windage stop! Apprecicate that suggestion!

There is a lot of short range Benchrest shooters who have acquired countless Hall of Fame Points using a front rest of similar design ( i.e. R.W. Hart, Bill Gepharts original Bald Eagle rest and others) and the very same Protektor bags. Just be sure to give Protektor the details of the guns you will be using such as forend style and width, butt stock shape and if there is a cheekpiece ( the rabbit ear bag you pictured probably would not work with a cheekpiece). Have them fill the bags for you.
The only upgrade that I can think of is to replace the adjustment knobs from MSC or McMaster-Carr. I would not get too concerned about adding weight- If your rest moves in the act of shooting you are doing something wrong technique-wise or improper positioning the stock in the bags. Those HOF shooters never used heavy bases attached to the rest bottom.

Thank you Mr LHSmith, I appreciate the information and will seriously consider your suggestions!

Thanks!

I just purchased a Protektor med(#2) owl ear front bag(slick material) for my Caldwell front rest. I emailed Protektor they suggested the med bag for my H&R M12. I shoot it for score at 100 yards, scope and open sight matches. Bag fit perfectly on the Caldwell. Rear bag is a #13.

As LH posted it is a good set up. The front rest is light and I had a problem with a 300 Win Mag torquing with heavy bullets. This would offset the rest. I loosened the front bag( reduced fill) and the issue disappeared. Still use with no intention of replacing it.

Thank you for the input! I emailed them earlier this morning for more info.

Great to know, thank you!

You'll wish you had Windage, imo

I started with a Caldwell. A great rest.
Bald eagle are good also ones after the back lash Moda are done .
I do plan to add the windage adjustment. When I posted this I didn’t realize it didn’t come with that and that its an option so yes I’ll be getting one with the windage adjustment.

Thank you!
