I had no idea they make machine cut barrels. I wonder why no one talks about them?
That is the barrels they dont turn down for carbon fiber wrapping. They bought some barrel company after they started- satern maybe. My 2 personal proof barrels are kriegers from way back
They are better than decent. They are very good barrels. I am no GS, but from the people I know that use them and the smiths that have chamber them, they are very straight and very consistent. I have one waiting to be chambered right now and wouldn't hesitate on getting another.I think I read Alex Wheeler mention they where decent.
Are the Steel barrels button pulled or cut?
I see they make a 30" Heavy Palma contour steel blank so maybe finish out at 28" or so. I'm not a big fan of the Palma contours, but I suppose they would work well. They also make a M24 contour, but only in 28" (finish at 26").
Noticed they show their steel barrels finishing at 1" less than the blank length, but I know most smiths like to take off more than 1" total from both ends.
The half dozen or so cut rifled steel Proof barrels I've chambered have all been excellent. They intentionally turn a 1.5" stub of the muzzles OD to .610" so you're forced to cut the "bad" part off. The do the same with the carbon wrapped ones. I believe the advertised length is what it will finish at.
So does anyone know if the steel barrels are cut rifled?
You know, their website does a damn good job of dancing around that subject. Maybe they are button rifled. Regardless, they shoot well.So does anyone know if the steel barrels are cut rifled?
well, it wouldn't be good to crown them first, and then clamp them in and wreck the crown... the nubs don't really serve a specific purpose. it's hard to get the reamer marks out of the last inch, so you chamber one end and cut off the other. it's all good when you plan it that way first.I'll bet the stubs on the ends of the barrels also serve a purpose for holding the steel when they carbon wrap them.
