Prone shooting mat

I went out shooting in the rain today for the first time using my Joypod. I have a cheap $20 Midway packable shooting Mat. With my joy pod centered on the mat my left leg got quite muddy and the mat absorbed the water from the ground

When shooting prone do you normally center the gun on the mat? Also any recommendations for a more waterproof shooting mat?

Center your body on the mat, and the gun will be off to the side of your shooting shoulder. If you are shooting F-T/R, you'll see most shooters have a separate piece of low pill outdoor carpet that the bipod legs set on. I have mine attached to a piece of 12" x 24" horse stall mat that I cut down.

I use a MidwayUSA mat, but not the one you have. This one is fantastic. It's wider, and has very nice padding. You'll notice in this picture that I've modified mine so my rear bag can sit on the ground, and I removed the front flap.

I saw Creedmoor sports offers a cut out in their mats is that generally preferred when shooting on concrete or grass as well?

My JoyPod sits on a piece of 15mm TriBoard covered in self adhesive car carpet. Rear bag on the ground. I have other shooters at the club that use spiky tripods that have cut holes in the mat. Whatever works for you.

I won a mat like Ryan's from the prize table at Buck Snort last month. It is much better than my old one. Thanks to Midway for supplying many nice prizes!!!

I bought a can of this https://amzn.to/3LSKns1 and spray the underside of the mat. At the end of the day if you're shooting in the rain just expect it to suck but this does help prevent or slow the water coming into the mat. I spray mine a couple times a year and it helps a lot especially when the ground is wet but it's dry out (like in the morning after a night rain) but nothing will be perfect if it's just plain coming down buckets.

I’ve had a Creedmoor Roll Up Mat for many many years. Vinyl bottom, not too big, not too small. Nice clip straps keep it rolled and tight. You won’t need another one. A+

Been using a Cabela's Mat for six years now in F-TR . Christmas present from my Son . It is a little wider than some mats , and has the front flap ,that gets my front Board , and side Flaps which I tuck under , or set my Gun Box on . Very happy with this Mat . Well made , and has stood up great to hard use on Ben Avery's crushed granite .

Spend the money and purchase the Creedmore roll up mat. It has a waterproof back and can be ordered with extra padding. If they offer the white rubber, get that as it is remarkably cooler in the summer. This willl be ur one and only time to buy a quality mat.
