Project long range rifle in 260 barrel options

I currently own a Savage 12vss with a chote stock in 22-250 and would like a more stable higher BC bullet for down range performance. I really like this gun, and the trigger. I would prefer to have a more percision bolt, but I can live with it as is.

I am interested in doing some long range shooting in the 600 yd and up area.

I have several options

Rebarrel my gun to a 260 via a sharp shooters supply douglass barrel for $280. Cheap but not sure about ultimate accuracy.

Re-barrel my gun to a 260 via a Kreiger or other high end barrel maker that will custom fit the barrel to my gun. I realize this is probably the best re-barrel option, but it will run around $550. Still not the end of the world, but is it worth the extra $ ??

My 3rd option is to build a new rifle around a remington 700 or better action jewel trigger and a krieger or similar barrel and keep my savage as a 22-250.

My wallet says re-barrel it via sharp shooters supply.

My head says go full tilt do it right and build a gun from the ground up, although the savage is no slouch.

Thanks for the patience.

I shot my Savage as a .260 for a couple of years. Frustration with the brass quality and the desire for less recoil, easier cleaning, and better accuracy, pushed me towards the 6BR.

That's how this site got started.

Unless you need to load multiple rounds in the magazine, in your situation, I would just call up Casey at PacNor and ask for a .272" neck 6BR, 8-twist 3-groove supermatch pre-fit barrel and a headspace gauge. Length between 26-28". Mine is a 27" about .91" at the muzzle.

This would be $305 in Chrome-Moly, $340 in stainless.

If you really will be doing most of your shooting at 600 yards and beyond, I would go with a 6.5-284. You'll have to push .260 brass pretty hard to get near the performance of the 6.5-284.
