Problem With NF BR - Maybe

My NF BR scope requires left windage to within 1 MOA of end of range to center on target at 600 yards. I'm using Farrell rings and Farrell base. Action is 700 that was trued when rifle was built. Gunsmith claims the holes on the receiver are in line with each other. He thinks I have a problem with the scope? I have not used it on another rifle to verify. The gunsmith who examined the rifle is not the person who built the rifle so he has no skin in the game.

Any thoughts? And yes, I know I probably should have used an aftermarket action but money was an issue at the time.

I don't own a NF scope but have had two Remington actions that required wind-age scope mount bases to over come out of align holes.

The holes are in line but are they on the centerline? I have a Remington with holes .010 off the centerline. Burris signature rings with the inserts and rear windage adjustment base/ dovetail front will solve your problem.

Just curious, with your scope set at 600 yds, where your horizontal POI would be at 100 yds?

You kinda answered your own question...take the time to swap scopes, the BR on another rifle and a different scope on the rifle in question. You will either eliminate the base alignment issue or identify it. If you eliminate the base alignment issue, then it's narrowed down to scope or rings.....

What Ballistic 64 said --- how many MOA from center did you have to use to correct wind age at 100 yds.?

It probably is the alignment of screw holes. It could also be the barrel is indexed to the right seeing you need all that left. Most gunsmiths index them up. I bet it is not the scope. Matt

you counted the clicks and centered the scope and it is 1min. off the end of the adjustment at 600 yds.? I think the guy that did the barrel job doesn't want to index it. because he never checked it. He screwed the pooch........ jim

Anyways you can guess my bet...

Turn scope 90 degrees and see if is off with both turrets. If it is - I would suspect scopebase.

When I had a similar problem, a guy suggested to me that I lay a 1 foot straight edge along the side of the bases & see where it points, then on the side of one base & see what it's alignment is to the other base.

I do a similar exercise. You can use this on weaver style also but I mainly use it on rifles with universal bases, I take a piece of straight, aluminum round stock and lay it in the rings, overhanging approximately eight to ten inches of the barrel then adjust the rear base screws. That gets me in the ballpark for boresighting at the range.

I don't think the cheapest scopes are made that sloppy.. I don't think NF would be a top tier scope if they were using parts that allows for that much error..

Depending on the cause, you have a few options, some down and dirty, the rest are more expensive.

a: Check and have the barrel indexed.
b: Center the base mounting holes by opening them up them to 8-40 (NOT by just running the drill through the existing holes. Doing this takes some skill. The first operation will NOT be in a drill press or with a drill bit).
c: Use universal bases with windage adjustment rear.
d: Use Signature rings with inserts (depending on spacing, it's possible to get 20 moa from them).
e: Buy a custom action.

NF scopes have generous adjustments. My money was on the rifle. My shooting body recently had this same issue with a R700 action last summer. Bought an NIB action and had a build done. Spent a couple thousand on a build to find out the base holes were off-center. The builder was able to correct it on his.
Worst I ever had out of spec was a FNH SPR rifle in 308. The "test target" from the box was dead center and well under 1" but the holes were so far off the best it would do was 3 feet off the right of a target a 100 yards. FN did me right though; sent me a new rifle that was an more expensive model. oh, yes, I did ask about that pretty test target. The honest answer was surprising and "classified".
