i received my new 284 back from my gunsmith..reamer was spec for win no-turn neck (my reamer).. .3175 neck with .220 freebore.fired cases will not accept a bullet(too tight) fired case measured .315 outside (10 cases none fit) sized loaded rd is .313 some .314ish(had forester die honed to .311)..this was to be just a fun gun for informal long range shooting..the reamer is going back to the mfg..so do I (1)ask for a new reamer on his dime and have the chamber re-done with a floater (2) buy the equip to turn the necks and learn how (my dime)I have over 500 winchester cases(3)have the barrel rechambered to 7stw(that reamer works) and scrap the 284 project..~Danny

I see that you wanted a no-turn chamber. I also use Win brass but turn the necks slightly just to clean them up. You might try that to get the clearance needed. My lot of brass needed turning and it made a big difference.

Cast the chamber and get a micrometer on the neck. That way, you know what you have and can make good decisions about what to do.

My bet is that it isn't as small as you might think. I've recently went to a reamer with .004" neck clearance and I can just barely get a bullet back through the neck after firing. If I run brass a thou thicker (.002 clearance) there is no way I could get a bullet back into the case. This is in a 308.

How does it shoot?
Does it make too much pressure without getting getting the powder charge up toward normal?
Are the velocities within 150fps of expected?
How many rounds do you have through it?
Is the brass new? Did you anneal it?

Busdriver,morning..new build just has 10 rds(break in)..new brass..being tite I,m sure I will have pressure problems, was hoping for about 2950+ w/162 amax..as i understand it 284,s like .004/ clearance for best accu.002 per side..if I have to turn then.fire case about ~.75 ea plus loading(500 ea),going to range / lost barrel & case life to fire those cases, losing a 1/4 of my barrel& case life, etc. as the case are now, I would not even have to size the cases to load them..there tight enough that a over length loaded rd will not chamber(the bullet will stick in the bore only .010 over loaded length) that is tight..~Danny

Contact DJ's Brass Service and let him turn the necks for you. His turnaround is always quick and you'll like the product.

gmorganal, that could work..I,ll give DJ,s a call..that way I,ll just have to buy a new forester FL die and have it honed to the new size...thank you for your help~Danny

I built a .284 using a PT&G Match reamer. I weight-sorted my brass and then set aside 10 cases that did not meet my weight requirements, to use for fouling rounds. All my selected cases were neck turned just to clean up.

At the rifle range, the first 2 fouling rounds using the brass without turned necks chambered without a problem, but the third round would not. I looked at the fired cases and found nothing out of the ordinary, except a little soot on the case necks.

I then tried chambering a round made with turned brass and had no problem. I repeated this with 10 more rounds and had no further problems. After this, I shot my load development rounds (25 rounds) without any problems.

Later, at home, I neck turned the cases set aside for fouling shots, loaded them and cycled them all through the action with no problems. All these cases had been "culled" because they were heavier (2.5+ grains over the average) and had a lot more brass come off when neck turned.

This confirms what some of the other members have posted here concerning this issue.

Regards,

My .284 Winchester reamer cuts a .3175 neck. My loaded rounds Lapua brass (no neck turn) necked up from 6.5 and sized in a .309 FL die loaded with Berger 180 grainbullet has .3125 neck. Check and see if your throat is the problem or the web of the case. Mark it with a felt tip or DyKem cand check for contact.

went to my gunsmiths this morning...pry er to loading I turned the cases with my forester 3 in1 case trimmer , called that good and loaded them..upon firing a little burr formed at the inside champher inside the case neck.. this morning,we retrimed them to length & rechamphered, I was able to put a bullet back in the fired cases, some loser than others...some of my winchester cases had .0145-.015 thick necks..so depending on how it shoots ,I may have to outside turn some of my cases...also where I measured .315 on my fired case with my cheap Mk (frankfort arsenal) was off...his measured .316-.3165..so hope that was the problem.. thank everyone for there help & suggestions ~Danny
