Problem with Henderson trimmer

I noticed today that when trimming my 6.5cm brass that the chamfer was uneven. So i opened my case holder more than needed, placed a case against the collet and slowly tightened the handle. As i was holding the brass with my finger tip against the collet i could see and feel a slight oscillation. Has anyone else noticed this?

Just a couple of ideas to confirm:

1) Check your collet to see if any debris is interfering with bottom of case fitting flush against collet.

2) If your cases have primers then you want to remove to avoid any irregularities.

3) Check for bent rims or burs on your cases. This is common if brass fired through AR platform.

I had this problem and I think it was I was pushing against the stopping screw too hard. It was causing stress on the guide bars and making it so the top of the case made more contact than the bottom. Stopping when the trimmer hits the stopper, and not pushing further than that, seemed to help.

I had the same issue as well as marring on the inner necks from the pilots. I believe the uneven chamfer is just the nature of the collet design. I tried polishing the pilots, running a brush in place of the pilot, etc.. In the end, I sold it and went back to the Giraud.

Are you just barely kissing the case mouth? Sometimes I find shortening your trim length to remove a little more material helps. I've also found any residual case lube on the mouth can cause some issues so make sure your case mouths are dry.

If you’ve run a bunch of cases and not cledaned it.. I’d disassemble and clean… lube the collet just like it came new. As far as the marring from the pilots…. I used 2000 grit sand paper and polished the pilots.. they are really slick now and I have no marring.

Checked each one you mentioned, all ok

the problem exists before i even start to trim. You can see the case oscillate whilst tighten it in the collet

yes shortening may help, but i dont want to trim them to much.

ive cleaned and lubed it. I have no issue with marring from pilot.

Take the collet out of the handle, make sure everything is clean, no debris and that the collet is seating properly.

Is this something that just started happening? Has it trimmed fine before? If not maybe the collet is out of spec, call Henderson and talk to him I'm sure he can get you on the right track.

You should be trimming before sizing unless you have modified the pilot diameter.

Is this happening with both sized and unsized cases?

Does your unit use the old Forester style cutter heads or the newer Taper Loc style cutter head?

I always size then trim with my henderson trimmer. Never trim a piece of brass that has not been sized. Brass necks get damaged on ejection and trimming that brass will cause all kinds of problems.
