Problem with custom action

Bought my first custom action this year for a new heavy gun build for my daughter..Got the action a few weeks back...My gunsmith put it together. Then the problems started. The action wouldn't eject cases.Found a large burr in the extractor grove that wouldn't allow the extractor to let go of the case.No big deal...Took out the extractor and removed the burr.Bingo..Works like a champ.Called the maker of the action made them aware of the problem,And let them know it was fixed.Next problem.Broke in the barrel. Then shot 2 five shot groups at 100 yards..Looks good...Took it to a local groundhog match. With my 13 year old daughter shooting it..To get her used to a right bolt left port custom action. The gun now has 16 rounds through it.On her 4th sighter shot at 500 yards the bolt stop just fell off.Should have seen the look on her face when she ejected the case and the bolt came flying out and punched her in the nose. The threaded pin that holds it on is gone..Found the spring and bolt stop though Then two shots later she had a misfire. Then another and then one more. After some fumbling around we got 5 shots on her record target. We then pulled the bolt apart and cleaned it up...Thinking it might just be dirty.Greased it up and put it back together. Some people there including myself thought I might have had some bad primers.Did manage to finish out the shoot.Which my daughter won with a 146..Called the maker, made them aware of the problem..Sent me a new pin..Made a trip to the range tonight to do some primer testing. Two different lots of CCI's and one lot of WLR's....All three lots had misfires..Now 1000 yard br season starts this coming weekend here in pa....I talked it over with my smith's.And after looking at the rounds that wouldn't go off. They both come to the same conclusion...Weak spring. They told me to call the people that makes the action.I come home and call. After about a minute on the phone with the person trying to figure out how we are gonna get this problem fixed.I get you don't even know whats wrong with it..My reply is my smith thinks the spring is weak can you send me a spring match season starts sat.Again I get.You don't even know whats wrong with it.My reply was All I know is I spent a pile of money on a custom action and it hasn't worked right since I bought it.Then they hung up on me.Now my daughter is out a heavy gun and they don't seem to want to fix this problem...Anyone have any Ideas????Sorry for being so long winded. But I'm smack dab in between a rock and a hard place..

Boyd,

PM me with the name of the action manufacturer and I'll see what I can do. Sorry for your troubles. Sounds like that was one made on a Friday afternoon when the assemblers weren't concentrating.

Boyd - Call Mark King - he is very familiar with your action manuf. I have never spoken with the feller that made your action, but he has a lot at stake...

Bruce Baer uses a few of those actions as well...

Paul, if you haven't heard from Boyd, call me, I can fill you in on the manuf.

I agree...But so do I...Jason,when you shoot at the level you and I do...There is NO room for these kind of problems or any problems for that matter..

Boyd, I know, I meant the response needs to be fast to maintain his reputation. All it takes is one shot to ruin a year-long agg :,

Let me know if I can help.

And they call them custom actions. Could be any of them don't want to know. What's important is what you going to do with action say 6 months from now. Most custom actions have had a bad day or two. Doesn't sound like a full refund hope you get some satisfaction.

I believe any manufacturer of anything can and will have bad days. I judge these manufacturers by their customer service, whether a barrel, bullet or action maker. If they won't stand behind their product, they won't last long in this business. There are just too many good action, barrel and bullet manufacturers out there. So far it doesn't sound like a very positive experience, hope it gets better for you.

O.K., so who is the manufacture. It would be nice to know so the rest of us won't have to go through the same thing.

I really don't see the need to out the manufcturer unless BoydHeaton gets no resolution in this matter. If, on the other hand, this whole thing turns sour in the end, then I woudn't blame him for letting the cat out of the bag. This was done to another action maker here on this website that is very well known and has an excellent reputation. I won't even read that members posts anymore because he had no reason to post what he did. How would you feel if you dropped the ball on something and one of your customers came onto a public forum the next day to proclaim you a BUM, without giving you a chance to correct the situation? As I said in my earlier post, everyone has a bad day, it's the final outcome that is important. I'm sure BoydHeaton will let us know how things turn out.

Then why post these troubles on a public forum?

Sometimes you gotta' vent, sometimes you want a little sympathy, and sometimes you want a slap upside the head. This is a good place to get all three at once.

All this talk is narrowing this down to one action maker. Some others will get an unknown black eye. The whole thing should have never hit the Forum. Bad customer relations.

Ya, lets have it! If the guy hung up on you, well all I can say is they are lucky it's you and not me. I have no tolerance for bad customer service - ZERO! So out with it man, name the guy and if he makes good, no harm, no foul.

Maybe, maybe not. But sometimes a little pressure on the manufacturer to remind them helps. I'm not saying the manufacturer in question wouldn't have made good in the end... but having something like this aired on at least three different internet forums, that I know of) where a good portion of your customer base logs in on a regular basis sure would provide incentive to get things straightened out. Gives the customer a little leverage they might not otherwise have.

That was part of why I did it...The other part was to find some answers or a cure...Changed some things around with my loading and still had one misfire. But I also had hang fires in 3 different guns...This problem does not seem to be a problem with the action.....All I wanted was a stinking 5 dollar part to change out to see if that was part of the problem...Its a shame it had to come to this because of it...I will say after being hung up on.The chances of me EVER buying anything with the name on it is about zero..All I want is a simple...I'M SORRY

I sympathize with you on this especially with the price we pay for Custom actions. But what you have now is a cat and mouse game going on. Several of the better connected know your manufacturers name but won't tell, but they are like women they are telling their own and eventually others will know. I always try and give the manufacture the benefit of the doubt. Like you say it is a $5 part. Don't know of any bad custom actions out there so it is not worth any harsh words towards the builder. Forget the phone. Write a nice constructive letter, a picture wouldn't hurt. The builder has already been outed just write the letter. I would suggest you kill this Thread.

I had an issue arise with a set of scope rings manufactured by BAT FOR A BAT.They offered to exchange the rings after I contacted them and explained the dilemma.Bruce Thom was more than willing to resolve the problem with out me even suggesting an exchange for a modified base.Painless problem solution in a timely manner.

Boyd, hope your troubles are over and good luck at the match.
