Problem Neck Sizing 308 brass

Hi all,

I'm using a Lee collet neck sizer in a single stage press with Lapua standard (not palma) brass and I'm sizing after case prep. On some cases I feel and hear friction in the press on the up and down stroke of the ram. The result is a case mouth with "little waves" instead of the nice straight and level case mouth produced by trimming and chamfering and deburring. It happened 14 times out of 100 pieces from the same lot. Any ideas why this would be happening? Thanks, Alex

I had similar anomaly with 223 and 308 so I disassembled and cleaned the die and played with how far it goes in the press. Works fine now.

It sounds like you have it overadjusted so the collet is closing before the neck is all the way in. Back the die off alittle at a time until it just squeeze's it to the point the case will hold a bullet with about .002 neck tention. If you see little marks that go straight up and down and you can feel them with a fingernail, then the die is way overadjusted.

Thanks it was overadjusted. Noticeably lighter tension when seating the bullet now. The mouth seems fine but it still leaves marks on the neck, but that's apparently common with the Lee Collet. Cheers! Alex

I have found that necking Lapua brass has thicker necks than the rest.and when I neck my Lapua brass with my coolet die its a little harder to run the case in.its kind of like running into a wall then it runs in.so trimming some off the necks will take care of it for ya.thats if this is you case in hand.
