Primers????

I recently bought a rifle and it came with some loaded ammo. I've shot some of the loaded rounds and they shoot really good. The rounds came with the bullet they used and powder charge and the type of powder but no info on which large rifle primer. I have several different types of primers so I'm trying to figure out what they used. They are copper colored so I know its not Federal or CCI as they are silver. I'm thinking either Remington or Winchester. All the loads are in Lapua brass so I don't think they used some off brand primer but who knows? Is there any way to figure it out? Maybe pull a bullet and deprime a case so I can look at the underside of the primer? This ammo shoots well enough that I'd like to duplicate the load, but I know, I may just have to start from square one. He/they had all the other info, why'd he leave out the primer info? Go figure! LOL

Call the guy you bought it from. Tommy Mc

Not to say I've seen everything but... the only truly copper colored primers I've seen are the red box Winchester match primers. WMGLR is the large rifle & WMGLP is large pistol. There is (was) also small rifle & pistol available, but haven't seen any of them in person.

Bought it from a dealer at a gun show. I have no idea who the previous owner was. But he had good taste!! Cooper Model 22 in 6.5-284 and an ammo can full of new unfired Lapua brass came with it. Oh, and a set of dies and 90 loaded rounds with Lapua brass and Nosler bullets. One of those deals you just can't pass on.

I actually think just starting from scratch with my own loads is the best choice. Guessing at something usually bites me in the tail end. I now have brass, powder, bullets and plenty of primers. Makes for a good reason to go shoot too.

You can, of course, work up a new load from scratch. There's a lot of pleasure in that.

But if you've already got the previous owner's load info - save only the primer - chances are high you're already golden. Just put pretty much any quality LR primer you have on hand in some of that (fired) brass you got with the rifle, duplicate the load, and you should be off to the races.

I called them copper colored. Bronze probably fits it better. I'm pretty basic when it comes to colors. LOL, that's why most of my cloths are white, blue and black. I just primed with some Winchester today and start out with my own loads. If he can do it I should be able to also. Maybe I'll stumble onto one that's even better. I have some 130 VLD-H Bergers on the shelf that should be a nice bullet for the Cooper.

No doubt with your own loads you will be able to test any primer you may have on hand. Sometimes primers make huge differences in E S & S D #s.

As a general rule, I don't shoot unknown reloads. They did have load data, aside from which primer. And according to the load data they were safe loads. With the quantity of Lapua brass, loaded ammo and dies, I just had the feeling this guy was serious. I just had a good feeling about his loads and they do shoot very good.

I don't even like shooting a friends loads but things seemed a little different with this deal. The rifle had a NightForce scope on it before I bought it. The NF put the rifle out of my budget. So we made a deal without the scope but ammo included. I got the rifle home and first thing I always do is clean the barrel. This thing was squeeky clean and the boltface was pristine. No rust, no faded bluing and the stock is nice. Everything about the rifle made me think that the owner was a serious shooter or at least a person that takes care of his gear. When I think about it, everytime we shoot a factory round, in a sense its someones reload. They just make thousands at a time. Lately even factory stuff is blowing guns up. I know I broke one of my own rules but just had a good feeling about this one.
