Primers do not always detonate

Brand new Savage 10, .223. I have used CCI BR4's, CCI 450, Fed 205, and Rem 7 1/2 with various loads, trying to get this new gun to shoot. All of those primers have had some that did not ignite. When they do go off, there is a nice crater in the center. When they don't go off there is no sign of a firing pin strike. Happens about 10% of the time. Sometimes, if I return the same cartridge to the chamber it will go off. Other times, it will not. This has me baffeled. Any thoughts appreciated.

Your gun is de cocking on bolt close. or your finger is hitting the trigger without releasing the blade. Try putting your finger in straight so you release the blade before the trigger is touched . When you close the bolt the leaver on the right side hast to be up. Larry

Are your primers seated hard into the primer pocket? I suspect you're seating primers flush and upon the firing pin striking them they are "jumping" forward, reducing impact and failing to ignight them

OK, will try, but don't think that is my problem. What is the leaver on the right?
The one you have to push down to release the bolt to remove. When you shoot a Savage your finger must pull straight. Larry

If you are not getting a dent in the primer then it's the trigger. A primer won't fire if the firing pin doesn't strIke it. When the trigger is set light you can trip the blade if you don't pull straight back. You have to make sure the blade is fully disengaged before your finger touches the trigger. You can increase the pull to help aleviate the problem.

I bet you your primer seater is creating a crater in the primer when seated. Consequently the firing pin is not hitting the primer properly. Is it a hornady seater?

+1 no primer strike means the firing pin did not release when the trigger was pulled. Was helping a new shooter the other day who had this very problem with his new Savage. I'd start with the trigger as the first thing to troubleshoot. Try increasing the pull weight...or getting a more reliable trigger.

Are you resizing all the brass with the same die? Might not have the right space from shoulder to bolt face. It's happened to me using a Dillon trim die and not putting the first couple in a case gauge. Ruined a couple hundred brass.

The firing pin protrusion is around 50-60 thou. It would be REALLY hard to oversize a case that much to not get a primer strike.

Trying to teach my wife to shoot. She needs to be reminded to pull straight back with the Savage trigger or it will not release the firing pin. Probably a good teaching tool. On the other hand, I had a similar problem with primers dented but not firing. Switched to a 32 lb spring and solved all my problems

Trigger. Sorry to say the other posters must not have read your post. When you have a fail to fire and there is not mark on the primer it is the accutrigger. You can tell because the safety blade will not move until you recock. You can also close the bolt very slow and then intentionally pull the trigger without touching the safety blade and you will see it happen. You may need to adjust the trigger to a heavier pull.
