Primer seating depth

How much is 'too much'?

Standard firing pin protrusion.

Small rifle.

Large rifle.

Lapua brass.

The primer face should be seated below the case head. The primer needs to be deep enough to seat the anvil and allow the cup to have firm contact with the primer pocket. Less than that and you will experience ignition problems. I have not found any issues with a modest crush of a few thousandths deeper than that.

So this is really controlled by prier pocket depth. The pocket needs to be deep enough to accomplish the above. Any more than that robs you of pin fall and ignition energy. As long as you have, or are close to a pin fall of 0.250", you should be fine.

I dont see where the primer type/size makes a difference.

I guess I’m more of a target guy versus a chart and graph guy.
I do believe those that test, likely find answers.
As I recall correctly, Speedy did pretty good at the TACKDRIVER this past year in Group. In fact enough to make most of the high end competitors drool. Now why would Speedy have made this tool, prior to Rabbit Hole coming out with a version? I guess he was just chasing unicorns. It seems he found them.
If you think about rim thickness and have happened to measure it. It really isnt that much of a variable in measurement. However, Speedy must have thought otherwise. Now lets think about this a minute....

Standard firing pin protrusion.
Firing pin protrusion is the distance the firing pin extends beyond the bolt face when in its most forward (fired) position. The generally accepted range for firing pin protrusion across most bolt-action rifles is .050” to .060”, while specific, tighter specifications often call for .028 to .036 inches (commonly for AR-15 platforms) or .055 to .065 inches for Mauser-type actions.

1911 45acp types- An inertia firing pin is a design where the firing pin is shorter than the channel it resides in and does not rest on the primer when at rest. When the hammer or striker hits the firing pin, it drives it forward, and the pin's own momentum/inertia carries it forward to strike the primer, even though the hammer may have already stopped. The firing pin is then typically retracted by a spring to its original position.

My sense is that theres about 50 things more important for accuracy than primer depth.

If primer depth on yalls pursuit of accuracy is the next most important step, ya need to be competing nationally.

We're literally talking about an explosion here. A coupla thou variation in primer depth just aint gonna make much diff in pressure / velocity.

My opinion from experience. May possibly be worth little more than ya paid for it..

Seat primers fully.

23,000 PSI is produced from primer firing, no powder in case.
If hot gas leaks up the side of the primer, the bolt face may get pock marked. Same as a defective primer.

**For many years I seated small primers with a large plug. This left all primers seated flush, not bottomed out. Not 1 misfire.

made this to seat primers to .008 below flush . adjustable . I kept hearing that primers could not be set correctly when the brass is held by the rim ,soooo I made one thats not held by the rim

My (slight) concern is that with my new primer tool, I'm reading .0065-.008. Previously with my RCBS hand primer, it was around .004-.005.

Just want to make sure that the 85 rounds that I just loaded all go boom.

A rifle Speedy builds probably would cost you 7-8 thou $. Plus the scope.
