Primer Seating Depth Question or Questions

After reading and following the thread ( https://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/primer-seating-depth-accuracy.4018358/ ) I have been pondering how much difference primer seating depth really makes (on target and on the chronograph). The difference on target at distance is what I am after, however that darn coronagraph leads me astray from time to time, so knowing how primer seating depth effects the chronograph readings is also a curiosity.

Is there a good (quality) test that is readily available that covers this? I have searched the internet and this forum a bit, (not a great deal of time spent at this) and came up with lots of thoughts and comments. The primer MFG's., make recommendations and such, as does several of the loading manuals, however I have not found a solid test on the subject.
Who knows, maybe I'm just "Man looking" as my wife calls it?

Thanks for any help

For me the depth is not an issue. However my 6br with Wolf Mag primers MUST be seated deep. Or click not bang. Just my two cents Tommy Mc

I scratched out some thoughts really early yesterday morning (see the attached pdf.)
In a nutshell, I am pondering shooting three or four, ? shot groups of three or four seating depths at 600 yards loading at the range using the same brass and colored bullets just to see what I see.

Give CCI a call and ask them. Hopefully you'll get one of the good techs that will explain it and provide you some pointers or results of their testing. JME. WD

today I noticed at the top of the accurate shooter front page has a interesting and timely article

which links a 2011 Shooting times article you may find interesting

Mysteries And Misconceptions Of The All-Important Primer

what I gathered from the article was that as long as the primer is seated and with a slight preload you are good to go. I only switched to the RCBS bench unit about 18 months ago due to arthritis in my hands. When I did so I purchased Darrel Hollands Perfect Primer seater modification to allow me .001 increment adjustments. Before that I used a RCBS hand tool for so many primers RCBS had to replace most of the internals just due to wear. For years I was always able to maintain single digit SD's just with hand seating and "feel".

Now this is just a gut feeling but I honestly feel that either a primer fires or it doesn't. Improper seating depth could result in a misfire but if that pellet ignites will have little or no impact on the primer pellets combustion. Like I said just a gut feeling but good luck with your test, I will be watching for the results
