Primer Questions

1. Is there any difference in the ignition characteristics between Federal Small Rifle Match primers 205M and standard Federal Small Rifle primers 200?

I believe the cup thickness is smaller on the 200 primers.

2. Would Remington 7 1/2 Primers be a better substitute for 205M Federal Primers?

Cartridge to be loaded in the 223 Remington on bolt rifles.
Reason for questions in that 205M Federal Primers have been very difficult to find in my area.

For my use, loading ammo for a .20 Practical, .204 Ruger, and 6.5X47 Lapua I have found CCI 41's, CCI 450's and Rem 7 1/2's perfectly satisfactory.

I don't know what your expectations are.

Some time ago I had a .17 Remington that I loaded to near max loads using the 25 grain VMax .177 bullet and Winchester small rifle primers and after a few shots - no fire - the problem was determined to be primer parts were extruded back into the hole in the bolt face (thinner cups?) and subsequently blocked the firing pin from striking the primer. Changing primers to the ones previously mentioned fixed the problem for the next 1000 or so rounds.

I would expect the 205M primers are sort of a go to item and have a following for fine results. An unbiased trial of Rem 7 1/2's would probably lead to satisfactory results in a .222.

The M means they were visually inspected and get a gold box. The remington benchrest primers are my go to in a 223 and the regular cci are just fine. I think youll find for your application you can use whatever primer is on your bench and be fine.
