primer question

how much pressure will a 209 shotgun primer handle? will it handle the pressures of a smokeless powder muzzle loader? the system im using now is a piece of 308 brass with a large rifle primer that has a crush fit on a nipple. it works fine but looking for other options and didnt know if a 209 would handle the pressure or ignight the charge eficintly. wheres spell check on this thing?

So far as I know, Savage is the only company that makes a smokeless powder muzzleloader. If anyone would hazard a guess they would be the ones. 209s ignite smokeless powder in shot shells, one would think they would be OK.

the diference in the savage and the ones i have built are that the savage only shoots about 45 grains of powder with a muzzle velocity of 2300-2400. im shooting 78 grains of 4895 at 3000 fps in a remington 700 action. i am also not shooting a sabot. all my bullets are swaged to fit the bore.

I have no answer to your question. Never owned a modern blackpowder rifle.
Sounds like a terrible idea though. "The system" your using now incorporates 308 brass. In front of that primer theres the flashole in the brass. That flashole greatly reduces the pressure footprint on the primer.
I'd quess your thinking of drilling that out and using a shotgun primer. A 209 has its own flashole. Its also designed to operate at only 10,000 psi give or take.

Just my quess but a modern muzzleloader designed to use the 209 primer probably has another flashole in front of it to allow it to handle the pressure requirements.
JMHO Your playing with fire, lots of it too.
