Primer pocket uniformer

This is my first time uniforming primer pockets. Working with once fired Hornady 6.5 creedmoor brass. It seems like I am taking out a ton of material out of the primer pocket hole. Measuring it seems to be in the .002-.003 range. I am using a brand new lyman primer pocket uniformer and holding it square as I can by hand.

Thanks

Most of what I see on my pockets, comes from the radiused corners in the bottom of the pockets.
Measure to the bottom of the center of the pocket, before and after and you should see little difference, even though you saw a lot of brass shavings, while uniforming them.
It's a good thing, to square up the pockets. You get a uniform seating depth.

Last year I got a bag of bulk brass in 300Win Mag that left LRP protrude upto 0.005". The pockets were shallow for about 10 cases primed. I "popped" the primers out and ran the uniformer through the whole bag. Lots of fine shavings. And a couple of days ago I was prepping some Lapua SRP brass and found some flash holes badly burred. But it goes to show even respected manufacturers can have "off days".

I use the Sinclair as well and use a lot of hornady brass. you usually do get more out of the primer pockets with the hornady brass which has been my experience anyway

Concur with other on the Sinclair tool - I also use it to clean pockets - works great for both uniforming and cleaning.

Look at the primer pocket dimensions below, the depth tolerance allows .006 to .007 manufacturing depth variations.

I have the Redding uniformers and they won’t touch the bottom of the pockets on some brass. If a person is looking to purchase these tools, I would definitely go with the above mentioned adjustable uniformers.

I agree with others who prefer the Sinclair pp uniformers. I’ve had a set for
??? Years and do volume shooting (p dogs) and they still cut well.

I use one of those foam meat trays, moisten a few paper towels on it, attach the cutters to my drill, cut away, and let the shaving fall on the paper towels.

Fold over the towels and discard....no messy shavings...

Have been using Sinclair primer pocket uniformers since the 90s and they do all I need.

I do my case prep work over a plastic tub. It think it was a hospital puck bowl, like they used to issue you when you checked into the hospital. When I'm finished I dump the shavings into the jar that I use for fired primers. I sell junk brass every couple of years and sell the primers with it. I know, brass shavings won't add much weight but its a good place to get rid of them.

I went with the Sinclair solid carbide uniformers,
I had worn one of these out and bought another. I prepped a bunch of brass with the new one without stopping to take a measurement. The new one went deep enough to cause misfires with my Russian primers. Lesson learned - always measure.

Started out with the Lyman LRP & SRP fixed tools , and purchased both sizes in adjustable heads from Sinclair , I think . Use all of them interchangeably , depending on the brass mfg. and caliber . PPU Mosin-Nagant brass has one of the deepest primer pockets I've ever come across , but very uniform on that depth . When I adjust cutters , I only set them to cut a nice sharp corner . Not the whole bottom of the pocket .
