Primer ignition testing.

ovenpaa

Are we shooting tomorrow?
I had to test the primer ignition of a prototype action today (C.G Delta LMR) The easy option was to prime some empty cases and then fire them off one at a time to see if they went bang which we knew they would do, the more interesting option was to add some technology to the project in the form of a high speed camera running at 28,000pps, the results were rather interesting...

This is a sequence of four shots taken at exactly the same period into the ignition process using a dummy barrel extending 18,0mm from the end of the cartridge. Chamber was .308 Win, Brass was Federal and the top two primers are a different make to the bottom two. Neither are magnum so it is interesting to see how much brighter the perceived flame is in the lower two images.

These were taken at the equivalent of 2800fps with no filtering or post image manipulation. The actual video of each test shows the ignition process slowed down to approximately 7 seconds in time

Today was not meant to be a scientific test, instead more a reference for the shift from coil spring to Belleville stack ignition however it has raised so many questions that we will go back and film again from two angles in mono and colour and with an extended range of primers and compare the Palma brass at the same time. I must point out this is not going to be a primer bashing test as I use both of these primers myself and have no plans to change them.

I have posted the rest of the videos of these tests on my Journal if anyone is interested in the slowmo bit.

Cool!

Yes, I'd like to review your other videos, as much for the primer results as for what you'll learn about spring vs. Belleville stack once you get a chance to run another set of videos.

I converted (with help from John Whidden) a Quadlite I have to washer stack a couple seasons back, see no reason to revert. Also have a CG INCH which came with such an arrangement, with it I shot my best season ever this year in Palma.

Very interesting thanks for sharing, perhaps some of this data will help you in further research,

The primer ignition videos can be found here however I would much rather see any comments posted to this thread than the Journal as I found the whole (Albeit brief) test very interesting and would be interested in other people views.

The action I was testing is another of Robert Chombart's designs and this was really the base reference so we can observe any differences when we move to the Belleville stack.

Ovenpaa,

I think it is to mention the FP tip is 1,6mm (.0625') diameter.
