primer for Varget

I shoot a lot of different loads in my 223 bolt guns
I have had the best luck with plain Federal--using Varget with heavy and N133 with lighter
CCI 400 do about the same When I have used the magnums and 41's the same loads seemed way off--I may be able to re tune for the stronger primers but just had zero incentive to do so--I only tried them because of the thicker cups--my one Savage craters primers but it needs firing pin bushed not thicker cups

I don't know but I used Remington 7 1/2 primers with Varget in my 223 Rem bolt rifles years ago with excellent results. I also used this primer with IMR 4198 in the 222 Rem. with similar results - outstanding.

The Lyman Reloading Handbook characterizes as this primer as a "Small Rifle Magnum" primer.

I run small magnum primers (CCI 450) in everything I shoot in competition. That includes 223, 6 BRA, 6.5 and 308 small primer brass. I use Varget in all those calibers. My testing showed that they work better than 400's. It's been a number of years since I tested though so the percentage differences are lost. I use 400's for 223 plinking and gas gun ammo and they work fine for that.

Depends WHICH magnum primer. I love running Wolf SRMs with Varget. They're a magnum cup, but a very mild primer.

I agree with the first "no" votes in that milder primers have given me lower ES and SD results.
