Primal Rights CPS - Portable Mounting Options?

MikeMcCasland

Hey Guys,

Just ordered a CPS and I'm wanting to avoid direct mounting it to my bench (limited space). Any of you guys who run the CPS using some kind of portable fixture, or have a way to temporarily attach to a bench? Any photos or descriptions of your setups would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

You could mount it to a cutting board, then use clamps to hold the cutting board to the benchtop, if the benchtop has a suitable edge. I have several pieces of equipment mounted to Catskill #1324 cutting boards, which I then clamp over the cubby hole in my reloading bench (desk), so as to make the setup modular. One of the pieces of equipment is a Rockchucker press. These cutting boards work very well, but likely any brand of cutting board would work similarly. I bought the Catskill boards specifically because they are 1.25" thick.

I actually circular sawed a cutting board in half last week to make a new (compliant) bipod surface. You just reminded me of that. I'll give it a whirl.

Thank you sir! ;)

I use the lee bench plate mounting system for my presses and misc bolt down tools. It does take up a little room on your bench, but can interchange with all your tools.

I seat of using the provided bracket that attached to the tool, you can use 3/4 ply cut to the same shape as the bracket and make as many as you need

As noted, I chose the Catskill cutting boards because they weren't stupidly expensive and were 1.25" thick, which allowed me to use nice big lag screws to hold down the pieces of equipment. After setting several of these up, I came across some nice thick hardwood boards sold as shelves at Lowes or Home Depot. I suspect one of those would also work well as a starting material if you don't have enough of your cutting board left.

Mike, should you build elevated or different storage for your components and expand your bench? Just judging by your YouTube videos

I went with the Inline Fabrication Quick Change plate system so that I could swap item in and out on bench top with only one mounting bracket. Not sure if this fits your need... offered in a flush fit or several different elevated heights.

I like that system a lot. I've never used a router before, so terrified it would come out looking pretty low budget. Something to think about....

@BP1 - That's probably the route I'll go. I didn't know if it had enough real estate on the side to clamp to.

Mike - Router wasn't as bad as it sounds. It is the tool that I have used the least. I made a jig/template out of scrap wood that matched the OD of the mounting plate. I used it to cut my outside profile and establish a cleared border. Now that the perimeter is established, you can remove most of the center material by running router directly along surface of area to be removed removing material in vertical rows from rear to front working across area from left side to right side. At some point as you remove material you will proverbially paint yourself into a corner... there won't be enough material left to keep router stable. At which point you can screw it to piece of scrap wood wide enough to span the work area plus some additional length to allow you side to side movement as you remove remaining wood. This is the low cost, DIY answer.

The easier answer is using a fancy router sled.

Bryan Blake has a really nice plate I’m sure he will be adding for sale in Fclass products..? He added a gauge also. Seems pretty slick as are his other add-on

I got mine screwed to a board and it doesnt need clamps. But to answer your question on clamps direct to the unit- yes it has enough real estate on each side

You don't have to rout a mortise.
I just surface mount mine.

That looks like a great idea but whats going on with the shape and all the holes- was that a scrap piece he uses for experiments? I definitely like the idea and his way of thinkin
