Price check- Deal or Dud

I need a little help. I went shopping for a 22 bolt action to use when teaching some kids to shoot. Now, I don't know too much about 22s but I found this on the rack at a local gun store. Looked good to me and it should serve my purpose so I bought it for $850.00. It's a Savage Anchutz Model 64 with a Tasco Model 705 6-18X40 scope. It also came with a set of Anschutz iron peep sites. So, did I pick well and get a good deal or did I blow it? The gun is in really good shape.

Lucky kids that's what I say! Lol.

I would have loved to have cut my teeth on a rifle such as that when I was growing up.. My first rifle was an old cooey single shot with custom front sight ( a piece of wood whittled to fit in the dovetail) lol.

Nice find , hope they enjoy it for what it is.

If it puts all rounds in the same hole at 50 yards you did good, if not you didm`t do bad. Now you just have to find out which ammo it like and all of that shooting can be real work. :)

Thanks, guys. I did this buy bass ackwards. I usually find something, come home and research the crap out of it . Then I decide and go buy or not. Some times, the gun is gone by the time I go back. I know a "little" about gun values but nothing about this one. It was a gut call. Besides, I have NEVER bought a Tasco scope. This one looked Interesting and old.

As Catfish posted, find the ammo it likes (most Annies like the expensive stuffo_O) and prepare to be bored.:p

NEVER bought a Tasco scope. This one looked Interesting and old.
If its an older made in Japan Tasco scope optic wise its will give any Philippine/USA/ assembled out of country scope a run for the money. Optics in the Japanese Tasco were very well made.

That scope is a Japanese copy of the BL Balvar, one of the early variable target scopes. Don't see many around, but I have seen them for up to $400 on Ebay, selling. So, even if it is a $200 scope, you got an annie for $650. Ya did fine.

You did real well as that tasco would sell easily at 400.00 so you really paid 450.00 for the rifle. I think it is a smoking deal.

Updated version. I did some research on the Tasco scope. You guys were right, it's a Japanese made 1970s vintage. I thought it might be wiser to protect a "collectable" so I pulled a 12x Leupold off another gun. It can swap with the irons pretty fast and won't bother me much if it gets dropped, bumped, etc. you know kids. And, my wife grumbled about how kids have good eyes and "should"learn with irons sooo......Oh man, it has been a while. When did 22 LR Ammo get to be so expensive? I haven't bought any in ten years. Wow!! I bought a sampling of every "match grade" they had.

I have had success with Eley Match EPS in many .22's including handguns. The price is one that allows practice also! JMHO
Great find and lucky children!

Great buy! Don't know if you want to spend the money for great ammo, but mine LOVES Federal Ultra Match UM2. Expensive yes, but shoots lights out (after testing just about every other type and make of Rimfire Ammo on the commercial market). Lapua Midas+ came in 2nd after outshooting all Eley ammos including Tenex and Black.

Thanks for advice on ammo, guys. Sorry I belly-ached about ammo prices. I'm not going to go cheap on the ammo. I guess "reality" hits me sometimes when I haven't bought some thing in a while. I remember when..........guess I'm getting old.

I have the exact rifle and looking at my notes I got really good results from SK Standard plus and Match ammo. They are both reasonably priced. The other ammo that it liked was green tag. The ammo that it loved was Lapua Midas Plus. But I just don't shoot good enough in the few position matches I shoot to justify the cost.

Much of the good 22 ammo was always expensive.
