Pressure points in stock?

My cousin purchased a Weatherby Vangaurd in 7mm Rem. Mag and the stock "had" pressure points in the barrel channel just behind the end of the stock. Somewhere close to where the sling swivel mount is in the front of the stock. Me, in my infinite wisdom, sanded them out before we even shot the gun :o! Thinking a free floated barrel is the way to go!! After shooting this gun for a while, we put a thin piece of soda box material in between the barrel and stock, and it grouped better. I want to bed JB Weld in the area where the pressure points were and I was wondering is this an appropriate fix to the problem? I have bedded with JB Weld before and I know everything involved but, was just wondering would this work? Thanks in advance!

Mike

If you are going to redo the pressure points, you'll need to hang a weight on the end of the barrel while it's curing, so there will be pressure on the barrel when it's finished..
I usually use a 5 pound weight when I do it, and it works well....

I appreciate the reply Preacher but, I'm a little confused. Which way do you hang the weight? Do you hang it pulling the barrel down into the stock or do you flip the action over and hang it pulling the barrel upwards? In my mind, I would think pulling the barrel down into the stock while the JB is curing would be counter productive because the barrel would "spring" back upwards leaving a gap in between the barrel and the bedding! Or am I flawed with my conception of this? Thanks again!

Mike

Yep, you flawed on that one.
Hang the complete rifle upside down in a padded vise, and hang the 5# weight on the end of the barrel and it will pull the barrel away from the stock, and when cured and you remove the weight it will pull into the stock..
