Pressure and suppressors

New to shooting with cans. Quick question, do you have to reduce powder charge when using a can in general? How about if you are shooting a load that is just under the limit? Like maybe slight flattening of the primer? I know the safe answer, I just don't have a lot of time before the next competitive event. I would like to shoot it (quietly) with my new can if possible. Of course I will shoot the gun with can before the match to re zero, double check drop etc If it's safe to do so. If there are any glitches I'll have to forgo the quiet part for this match and wait till I have more time for testing. Basically just want to know if it's safe to test fire my regular load through the can or should I start all over with load development. 260 AI, 48.8 gr 4831sc, 130 gr Berger tactical, .010 + into the lands, 26" barrel, Thunderbeast ultra 7. Thoughts?

None of my guns have gained speed with a can, you'll most likely experience POI change, but Tbac ultras supposed to be about the best there too.

When I first switched to shooting with a suppressor I never noticed any of my "almost maxed" loads going over max. Not all of them shot the same or better with a can either. It acts like a tuner in a way. Now all my loads are tested with the suppressor I use on that particular gun.

I have one rifle that is a perfect teaching tool for this actually. It's a Sako 75 in 223. With factory Fiocchi 50gr vmax ammo it will shoot in the .3s consistantly. I had it threaded this spring by a very competent smith and the crown was left intact. When I shot it next it was with a Tbac 30ps; the predecessor to the ultra 7. I also had my magneto speed hanging off the end because I was going to test the velocity I was actually getting with the factory ammo as I have a large supply of it that I bought just for this gun. It shot just about the same as before, if not a hair better. Cool, I thought, took the magneto off and was going to zero with just the can. Groups opened up to about 3/4 Moa. That was not good for this gun. I decided to try my old YHM phantom qd, because I thought the weight of the magneto plus the 30ps was acting like a tuner and taking the weight off took it out of tune. Sure enough, with the heavy stainless can on it was back to shooting in the .3s. So since I shoot almost strictly this factory ammo, I use the one heavy YHM can like a tuner and shoot on.

Direct impingement and other semi-autos may require change simply due to pressure dwell time changing. In theory you won't change the load for the suppressed effect; but you will change for the tuning effect of the weight on the barrel.

t shouldn't make a difference in pressure the bullet is already out the barrel. Larry

Sorry, you are correct, not in pressure of case as in overpressure; but in pressure in gas cycling system and reliability of feeding the next round.

My Colt 6940 would gain up to 125fps with some ammo with the AAC suppressor through the factory barrel.

CLE installed a SS Krieger barrel that is same length and I see very little if any change in velocity with the suppressor. They also installed an adjustable gas block and I can reduce some of the fouling blowing back in the action.

Sorry. I can't agree with that statement. A TUNER is adjustable. A SUPPRESSOR is not adjustable and they perform very different functions. Barrel harmonics change with both devices, but a TUNER is made specifically to alter those harmonics to achieve the best results with the load you are using. With a SUPPRESSOR, gotta live with whatever harmonic it gives you which means tuning your load to get the best results which in all likelihood isn't as good or efficient as a TUNER delivers. At least that's my experience.

I'm sorry you can't agree that adding weight to the end of a barrel is "like a tuner in a way". Of course a tuner and a suppressor perform very different functions. I never said a supressor is a tuner. Acts like and are; two different things.

Interesting to see 2 opposite views. ^^^
My MAE stainless can "tunes" my bedded hunting 308 6" right and low @100 to where it tack drives. :)
IME all cans change POI and decrease groups to some degree.
