Prescription eyewear

A year or so ago an article was on this site about the best prescription eyeglass material. I can't find it now. Anybody help? Thanks.

check main message board i cant figure out how to bring the quote to this thread under prescription eyeglasses

Look for a marerial in "mid" or "high" index if you have much prescription at all. Be more concerned about ABBE value than impact resistance. ABBE is a measure of the optical clarity of the material. Ploycarbonate is the most impact resistant, but has a relatively low ABBE. Don't forget a scratch coat, this is mandatory for any material other than crown glass. Anti reflective coating is up to you; it does reduce glare, but also reduces light transmission a little bit.

To advocate the ABBE value is more important than impact resistance is a terrible thing to say.

The safety of ones eyes are always the most important item when shooting!!!!!

TriVex is the recommended product for prescriptions:

I'm glad somebody read the article. We put a lot of work into it and not that many folks clicked on it. They must have figured "what's there to know?" In truth, when researching the article I was surprised at how much I learned about materials, optics, lens colors etc.

Agreed about eye protection BUT, any lens NOT in an ANSI Z87.1 frame is already GREATLY compromised. Look around and see how many are wearing string mounts, notch mounts, or any dress frame. Trivex and the other hybrid materials offer better impact resistance than any other material except poly and offer the benefit of a much higher ABBE value. Since you will not find a true "shooting" glass frame that is Z87.1, the small increase in impact resistance of poly doesn't really offer anything tangible. Not trying to upset anybody, just trying to help people see the target better and still not get hurt.

I wrote the part of the article dealing with prescription lenses. One thing I might add is find out what type of guarantee you are going to get before you buy.
I bought mine from Future Vision in Chambersburg Pa. and recieved a one year "No questions asked one time replacement" guarantee. I didn't think much about it at the time since I have NEVER had to have anything replaced.
Well, about six months into wearing them I walked around a corner into a dark room and walked right into a protruding coat rack shelf receiving a glancing blow right on the right lens. Didn't break but it did leave scratches even though I opted for Trivex with anti-scratch coating,anti-glare, and transition lenses.
At close to $500 bucks I was a bit ticked to say the least, until I remembered the warranty. I went back and they replace BOTH lenses,to get a correct color match) absolutely free, no questions asked. If I do something stupid like that again it comes out of my pocket, but I was sure thankful for that replacement warranty!

Your Optomatrist can configure your prescription for an optimum distance.
I know handgun shooters that have it optomized at 18".
I use glasses when shooting with a scope that are corrected beautifully at 4".
When I'm welding, the glasses I wear are sharp from 10" to 15".
Just an option for those having trouble.
