Precision Torque Limiters ?

Poor Shot 65

Any preferences for torque limiters ? Im looking for something that can work for action screws as well as scope installations etc ..

Thanks

Adam

Fat wrench here for most all of my firearms related fasteners. (and a few on my bicycles)

Fix It Sticks are great! Easy to use and set up in nice kits. I keep a kit in my pack and have a larger one at the bench.

Purchased a universal torque limiter from fixit sticks - i didnt like it at all and will return it today. Im thinking of buying a Borka.

Why? I have one and it works great.

I also have the sets with specific limiters and that might be an option too.

You want a Utica TS series torque screwdriver. I have a TS -100 and I got it used for about $70 on eBay.

I recalibrated mine using a hex key and trial weights I made from bagged food. Might have been yogurt covered raisins. (When I checked the lighter settings I ate more snack food). I assume it’s because it was stored “tight” and the spring had taken some set. A friend bought a different model and his required no calibration at all.

Even if you don’t calibrate yours, it’s very repeatable and that’s 90% of the requirement

The OP specifically asked about precision torque limiters, while a standard lb/in beam torque wrench will work for most of us, if you want to get fancy, these can be had for about 45 bucks per unit, and work really well for repeatable CLAMPING FORCE as long as your threads are lubed (or not) consistently-

EDIT- Poor choice of words. Torque on the fastener is not the same as clamping force.

Wera makes a few great drivers. If you want real precision in manual drivers; look to ASG for torque drivers, or they have a torque verification unit to check any other driver. I hate to say; as an owner of fat wrench, it leaves a lot to be desired. Functional, yes; accurate? Well I'll leave that for the others to mention. I've checked mine.

I use a Wheeler mechanical torque screw driver, I tried the electronic version and felt I had better control with the click action mechanical. Just a opinion there

From the Navy Quality Assurance manual - no matter what brand you use is to get one where the avg target torque is as close to mid range as possible. For action screws that would probably be a 0- 60 or 0-80 inch pounds maximum and a 0-15 inch pounds for scope ring screws. It would probably be better to get 2 seperate wrenches if you are really anal. I would not recommend a inch pounds wrench, the range is too high and broad on most. Also after you use a mechanical reset the target to lowest settings to release the spring pressure

I've been using a torque wrench all my life and first time ever I heard it called a torque limiter! ;) Never to old to learn!!

Avoid moly or other EP lubes, as this only makes the torque error band wider.

EDIT- Poor choice of words- EP lubes make the CLAMPING FORCE error band wider, which is the important part.

Too lazy to get up (grabbed pic off the web)but, this is what I use.

I have one of these and it's nowhere near my guns. Too awkward to use on flat or Phillips head screws. It is very good for small hex drive and head head machine screws so it gets used on my bicycle.

The big German ones are called gruntnclick. Or gutentite.
