Pre-threaded and chambered blanks for Savages?

Have you fellow Savage shooters had good luck with the pre-threaded/chambered blanks from any of the barrel manufacturers that supply them Pac-Nor, Shilen, McGowen, SSS, Northland? Just curious cause it seems I've read on here some fellows having good luck. Any preference? Thanks!

I am on my 2nd Shilen Sel match .260ai barrel and couldn't be happier with it for what I have in it in terms of the build (I did the headspacing, etc w/ go nogo gages) and the performance of the barrels. My 1st was varmit contour 26" that was to be a "tactical" build so it was a bit light for what I ultimatly decided that I liked to do in shooting 600 and 1000yd F class (I won the last match at Camp Butner, NC with it) so I sold it w/ approx. 800 rounds on it, so I never wore it out. My 2nd finished @ 28" and is a full bull barrel for the addl. weight that I wanted for this season.
It was a consistant .4moa barrel (most times it would shoot 4 shots into .25" @ 110yds and I would open it up w/ the 5th). I have some scary good "wallet" groups w/ it. The new one is looking at least as good during my break in/ load dev. period now.
My Dad went w/ a Match Varm contour .24" .243 Chrome Moly and is getting the same results. I am sold on the quality, customer service and value of the Shilen Barrels

Most all of the barrels, Shilen, Pac Nor, Douglas etc. are available as "blanks. Threaded, in the caliber of your choice, contoured and ready to chamber. (if that's what you're asking)
I picked up a 22 straight taper and had a friend chamber it with his 22BR reamer. A real shooter. The wait time most likely would be about the same. Anything good is worth waiting for. ;)

Thanks Savageboy! This is what I wanted to hear as I will be doing the same thing, except in a 6mmbr. I wondered if they came threaded right, chambered correctly, etc. for ease of head spacing? My plan is to get a Model 12 FV in 22-250, pull that barrel off, put a 6mmbr barrel on it and shoot the hell out of it. The take off barrel I will keep until I shoot out the 22-250 barrel on my Model 12 Varminter Low Profile. The FV barrel has a little slower twist but, it will be just fine. Thanks again for the input.

NorCalMikie, thats great! See I was looking to get away from dealing with the smiths on this project, nothing against them, because why pay them money to chamber when it will come chambered already. Terry probably would cut me a deal if all he had to do was chamber the barrel though! Thanks for the input!

Your plan will work perfectly, you may have to mess w/ getting the 6br to feed properly out of the .22-250 mag. Yep, no gunsmiths, lots of accurate shooting fun for the $. Chambered, threaded perfectly

And one advantage of going with a blank is you get to use a reamer of your choice. No "off the shelf" (what we have available) one size fits all reamer cut. If you want to build it, do it the way "you" want it. ;)

Guys thanks for all the input! I think this may be the way I go. I have another rifle laying around here but, that one will require a smith to rebarrel it and I'm not all that impressed with the stock either. We'll see. I hope to have this rig, which ever way I go, ready to shooot groundhogs when they start invading the bean fields. Should be a blast! Thanks again!

The folks you mentioned aren't going to use a worn out reamer, It been my experience that if you specify a certain neck or free bore you can get it, you just need to know what you want. I've own and ordered pre-chambered barrel for both Remington 700's and Savages from Shilen, Pacnor and SSS and had nothing but good luck. The 700 barells do still need to be head spaced but the the Savages come ready to screw on, no need for a smith. The latest barrel that I purchesed from Fred at SSS chambered in 20 VarTarg is a absolute tack driver. But I must omit the p-dogs don't care much for it!

RJ

Thanks RJ! It looks like I have some pretty good testimonials and I know what I'm gonna do now. Just have to decide which one of these manufacturers to go with when I'm ready to do this. Thanks again to every one!

Mike,
Go with the Shilen. I have one in 6.5x47 on a RB/LP target action and could not be happier with it. The quality and accuracy is amazing.

2 Shilens. 20 Tactical and 17 Mach V. Excellent and easy with go/no gages. Shoot great and clean up easy. Sorry meant 17 mach 4

Just to throw another one in the mix. BenchMark barrels will send you a Savage prefit ready to go. So far the reviews are excellent. I just ordered a 30BR (Robinett reamer) a few weeks ago. Should be half the wait of a Shilen if that matters.

+1 Benchmark makes some really good stuff for a really fair price. Tough to beat! I have one of the 3 groove 6mm on my 6x47 17lb gun. It drives tacks all day!

RJ: My thoughts wern't to mean "a off the shelf, worn out reamer" more like getting the throat cut to the length "you" want. If you're going to go with a threaded barrel in the caliber of your choice, you want to get it "chambered. the way "you" want. You want the throat long or short, it's you choice. Never figured you'de get a barrel chambered with a "worn out reamer". ;)

Odered a Pac Nor in 223. Was told 9 weeks, and it arrived 3 days shy of nine. Beautiful barrel and it shoots.
Also ordered a McGowen barrel from Jim at Northland shooters supply. He stocks Shilen also. Good guy to deal with. The McGowen is a good one also. I was on both websites just last nigt trying to decide what my next build would be.

Good Luck.

I've 2 Shilen select match prefit Savage barrels.

A 6br and 6.5-284 and very satisfied. I don't use the go gauge so I can adjust it to 0 headspace, better for the brass.

With Shilen, you have some choice about the neck size. Also when you order it, specify the kind of brass you will use.

I've heard that Brux is also making good prefit barrels.
