Prairie dogs in Kansas

Thinking of making a trip to Kansas to hunt some prairie dogs. What's the best
time to be the most successful and how much for the license. Can anyone hook me up on a good area to hunt?

If you are looking for a place to hunt you'll have better luck finding a three-legged ballerina than a hunter giving up their prime spot. You will need to sharpen your pencil and do your homework. I would suggest fire up Google Earth and note locations. Then go out and knock on doors. Accept the fact it takes work to find spots to hunt and plan accordingly.

Best of luck.

Really wasn't looking for anyone to give up their spot as I sure wouldn't give mine up
Just a point in some direction is all, been hunting for 25 years and don't need any guidance
on the secrets we keep. Just hoped for a little help since I have never been to Kansas

Wallace County looks like a good place to knock on doors or look up phone numbers on the County GIS and call in advance about hunting.

Four of us have gone to Kansas for 12 years running and it was as close to nonstop shooting as a person could ask for. But it started to drop off about four years ago, the last time we went was two years ago it was all but over. In previous years we had previously shot more dogs in a single day then we saw in four days of shooting. Our outfitter called us last year and informed us it would be a waste of our time to even drive up. They had the plague go threw three years ago and completely wiped out the dogs in a 100 mile radius that we hunted. After the plague went through most ranchers tried to eradicate what few dogs that were left by aggressively poisoning part of that was a state imposed plan. We actually didn't see a single dog in several fields that in prior years we'd had shot all day without running out of targets. If your thinking about going to one of the outfitters still advertising get ready to bend over, because they're towns are shot out by the the middle of May. We were our outfitter 1st group of the year for the last 10 years and he only booked 6 groups. My brother-in-law lives in Kansas and he said thing don't look any better this year.

Good luck on your quest

The POISON-has taken most of the dog downs to extinction in Kansas the last 6-7 years badly..,. I have lost most of my PD towns to the poison...its sad... but most of the land owners hate them... a non resident License is about 77.00 on line for a year--no season... no limit ( HA ) ... the Plague got most of my dog towns in east Co. just think about it , a section and a half of PDs gone... thats 960 acres of dogs gone... enough area for 3 guys to shoot over for several pluss days---do a little damage to the population..roll on to another town or rotate towns...they are hard to find anymore..and shooting them out ? dont think its possible... the Poison is...good luck...Neil

I hope you find a place to hunt. When I lived out there, one land owner I hunted pheasant & deer on had some, but never really was too interested in them. This was back in 2002 to 2005. Back then land owners were very approachable about hunting. I also hunted a lot of the public walk in hunting areas for birds. Majority of the time very successful a couple weeks after opening season.

Good luck,

Tim

7 year old thread, a lot has changed for sure less dogs. Lots of landowners that have been taken advantage of their hospitality.
