Prairie Dog Shoot

I got an invite to go prairie dogging in Neb. this year. The guy lives in Neb. and he said he had a lot of places to go. 300 t0 600 shots a day. (YAHOO!) Now the bad part. I may have to sell my favorite prairie dog rifle to have the money to go. BUMMER!! The guy has my trigger finger itching now. I met this guy on another forum. I was thinking on trying to go to Montana ground squirrel shooting. This will be a lot closer and I would rather shoot PDs.

I checked a few years back : Montana required no License . Nebraska did require one , and as I recall for non-residents it was something like $80.

;D Hate to see you have to sell your gun to finance your trip. So keep your gun and tell your friend I'll be taking your place.

Some states have what is called a "Non Game License" available to non res shooters for just this type of shooting/hunting. Always best to check applicable state regs..

I just got this e-mail from Neb. about the license.
Martin S ???

We only offer the two day hunt from Thanksgiving until the end of the year. You willl have to purchase our non resident small game hunting permit for $81. This permit will expire 12-31-2011. This is the only thing you need to hunt pairie dogs. Bob in Permits

Martin,

I took a look at the NE site, this is what I got from it...

Many mammals in Nebraska, including coyote, prairie dog and woodchuck, are considered nongame species. Residents do not need a permit to take these species, however, nonresidents must have an annual hunting permit. No Habitat Stamp is required for nongame species.

Nonresident 2-day Hunt*

Nonresident Youth Hunt (15 or younger)

I read this as: A: you buy an annual permit for 81$ or B: a 2-day for 36$ only after thanksgiving...

In short, if you want to shoot pd's in NE as a Non-Res, it will cost you 81$. I assume the two day permit is intended for late season bird hunting...

Go for it, sounds like you got an in on good shooting. You cant buy good shooting and a fun time for 81$...
