PPU prvi 22 hornet ammo on prairie dogs

1raggedhole

I picked up a Browning 1885 in 22 hornet. Planning to rechamber to k-hornet. Was thinking about buying 500 rounds of the prvi ammo and use it on pdogs to fireform the brass. That ammo is listed as 45gr Soft point bullet, but can’t find any description of the jacket. Anyone try this ammo on prairie dogs? I am just hoping that it opens them up.

That ammo unwraps squirrels pretty well, if you can hit them. At least in my rifle, it's about 2moa at best, handloads regularly make .5moa in the same gun. I bought a bunch of it awhile back when I couldn't find any hornet brass, and I ended up pulling it all apart rather than waste time shooting it.

It shoots good in my O/U but I cant find it
around here. Did find it online but only use it
Turkey hunting so ain't hurting too bad now.
Maybe it will show back before I run out.

PPU in 22Hornet is reasonably accurate in my 10'' TC Contender.. PPU ammo is very accurate in other 22 calibers l have tried. My very first PD shoot, early 90s was factory PPU 50gr sp in 222Rem. New PD shooter l took to Tx in June shot PPU factory 55gr VMAX in 223REM. Made a 553yd shot the first hour, thanks to PPU

I'm no help at all IRT the PPU Hornet ammo as I handload, but as you have an 1885 Hornet Low-Wall as I do, I'll share mine. It was chambered to "K" right away, and in the years since it's launched a fair amount of PD's, squirrels and rock chucks, mostly using the old Nosler 45gr SP, now discontinued.

You'll never regret going to "K-Hornet", and it's a great marriage in one of these sweet little rifles.

It was love at first sight. Can’t wait to get out and shoot some numbers with it. Also thinking to have trigger work by Lee Shaver to bring the pull weight down.

The little 1885's are great little walkabout rifles, and no slouch in the accuracy dept. either once the favored load is found.

Here's about the best mine will do....plenty accurate for all the grass rats, and head shots on chucks out to my personal limit for that critter with this rifle; 150 yds.

Years ago once I found out how accurate this bullet was, I laid in about 2K....still shootin' them. :)
Good luck with yours, we'll be watching.....

The (probably) similar Speer 45 grain PSP is the only bullet I ever shoot out of my .22 Hornets. They are more reliably lethal on our big Eastern woodchucks, and of course won’t splash like the plastic tips, but I’ve seen some pretty gruesome results at times.
Years ago, I ran several boxes of now-discontinued Federal Ammo tipped with those Speers through a Savage Model 40 and into some groundhogs on a close-in farm where that Hornet was the only centerfire I dared shoot. Set up in a hedgerow and watched through the scope as scores of them fell over in slow motion as they were hit. What fun.
That combo would put four relatively quick shots in a perfect 5/8” or less vertical string. Any Hornet rifle I’ve had since (3) would need those bullets handloaded to achieve similar accuracy. Thought I had to get rid of that Savage because it - duh - “didn’t have a magazine”. Sigh.

Be careful, Privi is very good brass but I found it split until annealed when FF to K Hornet. Wouldn’t want you to buy a large amount just to find you have to pull it down to anneal. nvtoy

I lost 1 in 10 cases to splits when I fire formed this ammo in my k hornet. also the necks are a little thicker, so they might not chamber in your rifle, depending on what reamer was used to cut your chamber. I found out that there are two popular versions of the 22k hornet and the main difference is about .003 in the neck diameter dimensions. I am still using the brass, but now it's formed into 20AH and holding up well. good luck

Just bought 500 rounds HSM loaded with 35 Vmax. They told me it is new RP brass, so hopefully it forms without cracking.

PPU will do 1.5" at 100yds, 10shots in my 1885. Haven't shot any of my reloads yet, but thinking it will do much better. Sent my trigger in to Lee and I am happy with it. Do you have a "K" reamer?

I have new 22k hornet PT&G reamer I would sale for $150.00 shipped. it is new, never cut a chamber, as I said in my other post, I went to 20 AH, so I don't need this one. I can send you the print if you are interested
Thanks, but Lee Shaver is going to rechamber and do his trigger magic.

Have a scoped 22 hornet rifle built on a Martini Cadet action and its a fairly accurate rifle. Only factory ammo I've shot in it is the Prvi Partizan and I then use its brass to reload. Nothing wrong with the Prvi Hornet ammo, shoots decent. However, don't expect it to be match grade. My reloads always give me a better group than the Prvi.
