Ppc bolt face options

Hey guys I have a panda action that i mention in another post that I want to turn into a bench/LR handgun, it's currently a 220 Russian but wanted to do something to make it a bit more of a long-range gun. What wildcat options would you recomend are there other parent cases that use the same bolt face? I don't think I want a 6ppc or 22ppc. Any other options or thoughts appreciated.
Best,
Don

Howdy !

Gee... your case choices ( for varmint use ) would be ltd by that PPC bolt face.

Outside-the-box........ .224 Weatherby might work, as its rim diam is a scant .011 " smaller than your bolt face. Ir's an off-the-wall choice, and brass $$$ would be perhaps one consideration, based on your application(9).

I shoot a .224" calibre wildcat that has a rim .013" smaller in diam than the .308
bolt face of the rifle that shoots it. The rifle/ wildcat cartidges feed, shoot, and extract ok ( I use an M-16 extractor on my botl rifle ).

Best of luck in your endeavors !

Don, in the long run the most cost effective thing is to have Kelbly's modify the bolt face to work with the .473 and .445 cases and fit the extractor that will pull both cases. That way, all your options are open.

Good luck with your project. :) -Al

Hey Don,

Hope you are doing well! As noted, the Grendel case at its variants use the PPC boltface. Maybe use the 6mmAR round (6.5 Grendel necked down to 6) www.6mmar.com

I'd probably be inclined to have the BF opened up to a BR (most any gunsmith or Kelblys and about $75 would get it done) and then go with a stock 6BR, or maybe if you happen to already have a variant thereof, like say, maybe, a BR-DX... ;)

BR brass is so much cheaper and more readily available than Grendel, and you get just a little bit better performance.

Wishing a safe & Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Yeah, as a few other said - 6.5 Grendel, 6mmART40 or maybe if you wanted a 6.5 that's a little hotter you could do a 6.5 -ARt40, if it exists. I've wondered what the Grendel would do with a tad more boiler room.

I know I've seen guys with the 6mmT40 on here in bolt guns claiming 3000+ FPS with 105s though.

Thanks guys the Grendel is a good idea as is the notion of opening up the boltface. Mark the dx is a good idea too as I have the dies for it and still owe you a round of golf ;) for those. I hope the golf comment doesn't get me killed here but as we discussed I don't actually play much because I am always shooting.

What's the most you can safely open a ppc bolt face to accommodate guys? Can the be opened to wsm cases or is that a whole separate bolt action combo?

I hope you all have a great holiday

That's a good question. I wonder if it's even a question of safety, more of a question of function? Most Mauser actions out there don't support that portion of the case at all really.

It may be worth while to just purchase a second bolt in the face you desire, that way you can still use it for the ppc rounds as well. Then you could have the .220R barrel cut down and have a switch barrel. Just a thought.

EDT: This really is only applicable if you can and do go the WSM route. Sorry, should have clarified my intent more. You can, as has been stated several times, use the same bolt for both ppc and BR cases with proper extractor and bolt face dia.

Many Stolle actions, manufactured after 2000, had the BF set up to work with either PPC or BR cases. You might want to call Kelbly's and give them your SN.

Hey Don,

I am pretty sure you can only open up a Kelblys bolt to a BR/.308 face. Kelblys magnum bolts are all flat faced, not coned like your PPC bolt is... I had a coned one opened from a PPC to a BR and it works perfectly.

Don whats up, call them up and just get you another bolt. Then you will have the best of both worlds. Have you shot the pistol yet. ;D
