PPC bbl???

who makes the best bbl to shoot the 68 Ultras in the 6PPC for 100 and 200 yard UBR and what twist would you get and what length would you advise,,need to make 13.5 pound weight with 35X Leupold Comp scope,,Leonard stock and Farley action,,

thanx

is there a magic length they shoot best or you just cut them off where they will make weight,,seems most PPCs I see are short around 20-21 inches???

Gotta make weight and thats where a lv gun makes it. Hv usually the same because of the taper and stocks they end up right around there. No reason other than weight (mainly)

is there any benefits to a longer lighter bbl finished at the same weight? probably not I guess or everybody would be using them????

No those approx lengths are perfect for powder burns, efficiency and all that other jazz thats way over my head. After all these years and all the experimenters its still the same

Have you taken the barrel off and weighed just the rest of the componets to see how much weight you can afford? That would be a good place to start. The good barrel makers will then tell you how many inches of what taper you can afford once you know the rest of the weight. Also is there any weights in the stock that can be removed and keep it balanced to ride the bags well.

While the HV taper is a good one, I have a few that are "varmint" or Bull barrel taper that (properly tuned) will shoot much better than I can shoot em. You're lucky too in that you have a BUNCH of really good shooters near you that would be glad to help you out and some may even have a blank or two or 5 to help you get started. PM me and I'll name a few for ya. ;)

Kreigers are good, but Hart, Douglas, Lilja, and Shilen also make exceptional barrels for the PPC. WD

,,rifle has a 28 inch HV 6BR bbl on it now,,it has a Spencer 6PPC bbl with it that seems real light to me,,but I will weigh the rifle setup with the 35X Leupold scope like it would be ready to shoot minus the bbl,,,it might shoot as is but the chamber is setup to shoot no turn Lapua 220 Russian brass with a .272 neck,,

I am gonna shoot the Spencer bbl as is with new brass but am figuring on having to get a new bbl and chambered for a tighter neck,,but we will see how this no turn chamber bbl goes,,

ok,,got the BR bbl off and got some weights and measurments off PPC bbl I have,,

the stock,,action and scope mounted weighs close to 5.5 lbs,,the PPC bbl is 1.200 taper to .934 at 21 inches and the rifle with PPC bbl and 35X Leupold weighs right at 10.5 lbs,,

on the brass in the .272 neck,,with new Norrma brass loaded with 65 Bergers measure .2665,,,with Lapua 220 russian brass sized in a redding FL die measures .2725 and wont fit in the Redding seater die without turning the necks and would have to be to big to fit in the .272 neck chamber with a bullet seated,,
the necks on new 220 Russian brass are actually too thick to fit in the Redding seater to even seat a bullet without turning the necks,,

so even with a .272 nd I will have to turn the necks down to where a loaded round will be .269-.270,,

got the PPC bbl on rifle and loaded 20 rounds Norma brass with the 65 Berger and 23 grs VVN 133 just to get a zero and see what the necks measure after firing to find out exactly what the ND actually is,,

will update as time and weather permits,,

Youll have to drill your die out. When we went to thicker necks that was a downfall. No problem just takes a second and dont have to be any exact size just .273 or so

shot a few rounds with the virgin Norma brass with 65 Berger FB and 23 VVN133,,the neck on loaded round is .2665 and necks coming out chamber are .2701,,shot a few rounds gettin zero at 100 yards and shot 3 shot group that looks a lot like one .357 magnum hole,,then shot 5 round group after adjusting scope and it looked a lot like the 3 round group,,

I think I will tinker around with the Norma brass and see how it does after a couple loadings before I start drilling on my dies or messing with the Lapua brass,,if I am gonna have to turn the necks on the Lapua brass to use in this chamber I will probably just get a new bbl with a tighter neck and a little heavier contour for the 13.5 pound UBR weight limit,,

thanx for everybodys help,,hopefully I will have all my ducks in a row and get to Gallatin for their UBR matches starting in March,,

The 23gr of N133 is a pretty timid (low amount of powder) load. If you can increase that you might be able to tighten that group up some. Not that it was a poor group that you shot. Just my experience. WD

I agree, for the very best results you want to hit that case hard on it's first firing...fill the case with your 133 leaving just enough room to seat a bullet......this is safe since a lot of the pressure will be exerted in just expanding the brass (in this case going from .220 R [necked-up to 6mm] to 6 PPC.

I will ease into it,,the Norma brass is 6PPC USA not 220 Russian,,I have never loaded for a PPC and didnt want to blow anything up and started 1 gr below what Hornady has in thier manual for the 65 VMax,,I have had good luck in the past finding my seat depths first with a mild charge then finding the hot node that shoots best,,

believe me I will find the max load,,

shot 10 rounds right before dark today 5 at -.010 and 5 at +.010..will try .015 .020 and ,025 and work in .001 both sides of the best depth,,then I will start on the powder charge,,

Sorry- i just looked back and yes. Man one puff of wind will throw you off the barn size target at 100! That manual keeps rugers and sakos from blowing up. Bump that dude up 5-6gr then start testing. Youre waaaay off

remember this is a .272 neck chamber using Norma brass,,I will go up .5 grs at a time until I feel or see high pressures,,I have my doubts about getting where I want to be with the .272 neck but am gonna give it a fair try,,

I have a box of the Lapua 220 Russian brass but kinda saving it to see how this bbl does with the Norma brass,,

TClaunch does my bbls and has a new PPC reamer coming and if I dont get results with this bbl that came with rifle I will have him chamber me one that will edge up against the 13.5 lbs UBR weight limit,,

I hope to get the seat depth tomorrow and start working up on the powder also,,

hopefully have some 68 Ultras and LT32 to try next week or so also,,

I might even screw the 6BR bbl on and see how the 104 BIBs and RL15/Varget will do at 600,,weather permitting,,

I think they dont make those Berger 65 FB bullets anymore anyway,,

IDK how well they would shoot at 100 but the 104 BIBs will shoot less than .500 at 300 yards from my BRDX and the wind wont blow those very far,,

seriously,,hope the Spencer bbl shoots the 68 Ultras from the Norma Brass with the fullhouse 3300 fps loads but if not probably have it chambered to fireform brass for the Krieger bbl that will more than likely end up on this rifle,,
