Looking for some advice on powder selection Need something that will let me in the 1500-2500fps range safely. Would prefer something temp stable . Gonna mainly be for powder coated gas checked cast bullets in .308 30-06 7.62x39 7.62x54r .
I know theirs all the classics in the Lyman manual buuutt that was written , what 30years ago ? Wanted to know if mabye their some newer stuff that would work. Possibly some of the stuff alot of suppressed guys use in their reloads ?
Thanks

Unique is your friend. 2400 has some use as well.
Newest powder I know of with published data AA5744. Many will say it is what replaced SR4759, it is what there is to use. It works but of the dozen cartridges I use SR4759 in, 5744 is a poor replacement.

I believe Hodgdon had reduced loads using 4895. I don't remember the percentage they said was safe. Maybe someone here will remember. Lyman put out a cast bullet reloading manual at one time.

I concur with SR4759 but it is discontinued. That is what i use in my low recoil 30-06 and 308.

I use Unique or Hodgdon International, 13g under a 110gr lead bullet in 308 and 30-30.
Makes it so soft that my brother, with crippling arthritis, can still shoot. He loves knocking down targets from 50-150 at our BP range.

I have been using BE86 in reduced 308, 30-30, 7.62X39, 223 and a few others. I use Lyman cast data for Unique but with plated and jacketed bullets. BE 86 leaves less unburned powder than Unique, measures very accurately and gives me better accuracy. In cases up to 308 size, large pistol magnum primers work very well, saving my supply of large rifle primers. There seems to be a sweet spot in the 1600-1800 fps range with BE86 where I'm getting complete powder burn, reasonable pressures and great accuracy.

The only caveat is that pistol powders ramp up pressure very quickly approaching max loads. If I want more velocity, 5744 is hard to beat.
