Powder types

I am new to reloading! and was advised by a friend helping me to learn. to use ball powder. I am looking for a list of the different powders and if they are flake, ball, or cilynder types. Where can I find this information?

Recommend you buy a quality reloading manual (Lyman's Reloading Handbook is very good) and read the chapters that cover the basics. Most reloading manuals list powder type produced before the book's published date and where they compare to other powders in burn rates.

Some manufactures list this info in there description. There is no need to limit your self to ball powders, they meter good but so does some of the "stick powders". You need to tell us what you are loading for and what type of shooting. If you are using a machine like a Dillon or other progressive loaders small grained powders do give a more uniform charge. Hodgdon has both stick and ball, winchester is almost all ball, some Accurate powders are ball. Find the powder you are interested in using and go to the mfg. description and read about that powder. Powder such as H322, Benchmark, IMR 8208XBR, RL-7 and 10X, VitaVuori N130 to N135 are just some of the "stick powders" that will meter well. Ball powders can be tricky when the temperature is high and when using top pressure loads, the addition of just a .5 gr can cause over pressure and ruin cases.
