Powder type, burning temp. and throat erosion - re: 223 AI new build

I'm sure this subject has been sliced and diced by many in the past, but I'm just seeking collective guidance and wisdom for a newly re-barreled Cooper 21. Details are: Lilja 224, 1-9 tw. 26"SS, 223 AI chamber ---- just loaded newly formed LC-09 brass with 25.5 gr. of N540 (Sierra accuracy powder) over CCI 450 primers and 69 SMKs and Berger 70 VLDs for starting barrel break-in.

Last night, got to surfing the web and read some alarming commentary regarding double base extruded and ball powders vs. throat erosion. Since my objectives are accuracy over time for casual target and varminting, any thoughts or recommendations going forward? Would I be better off working-up single base powder loads? In reality do ball powders really burn cooler and offer longer barrel accuracy/life? Anyone shooting a similar set-up that can share some experience and wisdom?

I'm not a hot-rodder and will opt for accuracy over vel. given a decision point or choice.

Please share your thoughts, comments, recommendations and suggestions ---- thanks in advance, Tooter

My Opinion....If you are wanting speed..go for it., but if you want accuracy go with the powder and bullet combo that gives it to you the way you want it, forget the the barrel life with different powders. Why extend barrel life on a rifle that does not shoot the way you want it to. Accuaracy is your preference, shoot the combo that gives it to you, then replace the barrel if needed when it loses that accuracy. Remember this, you go around only once, do it your way. :) Try Ramshot Tac or Xterminator, shoots very well in my 223 AI. A friend shoots VV 540/69 gr in his 223 and it is Super. barrels are meant to be replaced, aids the economy.

In reality our military loads its 5.56 and 7.62 ammo with double base ball powders and they do not do this because they wear out barrels faster.

According to the MSDS sheet for VihtaVuori powders they use up to 30% nitroglycerin in their powders and Winchester uses up to 42% nitroglycerin. The problem with this information is pistol powders use the most nitroglycerin and rifle powders the least and they do not divulge the percentage for each powder type.

I use double base H335 and WW 748 in my two AR15 rifles and would also assume the Finnish military doesn't use double base powders because they wear out barrels quicker either.

Starting at 43,000 cup the peak flame temperature is just starting to reach the melting point of modern steels. If you don't want barrel erosion then buy a 30-30 that operates at 38,000 cup. ::)

I would say Johnny Depp, who plays Donnie Brasco in the movie said it best....................forgetaboutit. ;)
