POWDER TEST

I've kinda been doing that, simply because I have some FREAKIN OLD powder that costs me nuthin.

Brand new barrel that I decided to do a break-in with, try a couple different bullets, and ball-park a seating depth.

Funny thing was, that old powder chronied three or four hundred fps slow for the listed charge weight, but accuracy was pretty good. As I brought the load up to get normal velocity, the accuracy got great. I may wind up using the old stuff for my final load. jd

I'd not recommend using fire forming at the same time as looking for pressure signs; but it sounds like you'd be looking for more performance consistency than max pressure while fire forming. Generally bad to fire from your primer pockets at the same time as the shoulder. Otherwise, it's a great time to see if a powder or new bullet will be "easy" or "hard" to tune in.

Can you do a powder test and fireform brass and break-in a new barrel , at the same time.

Howdy!

Yeh... You can gain some notion of whether a certain powder holds potential to shoot well. However, not so much if you are also " blowing out the shoulders " on newly- formed / un-fired
wildcat brass ( an " Ackley Improved " case, as example ).

What you are proposing should not prevent you from cleaning or " breaking in " the barrel.
