Powder Suggestion

Down to 5# of Varget. Shooting the 168 Hybrid and the 185 LRBT with some 178 Amax too what would be a good powder choice to look at?

I can get IMR 4064, PP 2000mr, 8208 xbr, or H4895. Is there any benefit of one over the other as far as clean burning/temp stable?

I got great results with H4895 and the 185HPLRBT. It should also work well with the 168 Hybrid. I haven't tried the others on your list yet.

Surprised you do not have a long list of suggestions already. Either way here is my 2 cents.

I have had a tremendous amount of success with Reloader15. For me it has worked with 168 & 175 SMK, 180 JLK and Berger 185 LRBT. I run a Savage 12 with a 26" Hart 12 twist and velocities are consistent 2600 at 30, 2650 at 60 and 2700 at 90 degrees.

I am experimenting with Power Pro 2000MR, but the jury is still out on that one.

Stay safe,

The military is now using IMR-4064 for their special long range sniper ammunition. They were having problems with the older ammunition loaded with RL15 and heat. So they switched to 4064 "but" General Dynamics Weapons Division owns the IMR powder made in Canada so I'm not sure if it was a practical or a "political" change.

I never used 4064 or H4895. But heard they are staple 308 powders. Only tried half a thing of 8208XBR and never really got enough use to make a conclusion

Guess I could buy 2# of each but when I found one I liked I wouldn't be able to get it when I need it

Well depending on how quickly you could come up with a decision that you could use 4064, there is a place that has 1600+ 1lb containers in stock.

I have tried XBR8208 with the .308 mostly with 168 grain match bullets.I got some pretty good results and fairly clean burning.Never got to the high node because I didnt need to.

Not sure why y'all didn't mention who has all that powder available but I will. It's ThirdGeneration. If your still undecided, just something to think about... A lot if not a majority of palma shooters who shoot .308 use H4895. Who knows, maybe they know something ;D

I'm needing velocity to get the 168hybrid and 185 LRBT to long distance without pressure issues. Also needing it to NOT be sensitive to temp. I shoot in 90F weather in the summer afternoon and can be in the low 70s in the mornings.

I guess this will be a live and learn. As the only powder I really shoot is Varget. Tried RL15 but was temp sensitive for me big time

I will not be shooting anything heavier than 185s

Since it will be about six months before you should experience 90 degree days again, I'd set the remainder of your Varget aside. Pick up enough IMR 4064 or H4895 to tie you over through the winter. Most likely you will be able to pick up some Varget within the next five to six months.

I just checked Bruno's and they say they'll have Varget today, although at a premium price.

yeah I was really trying to get something to last me through working up a load and shooting in the last 3 matches I know of. By the start of next season I should be able to get powder and 185 LRBT I hope

I left Varget when it was scarce the first time Obama got elected. Since then I've put together my .308 FTR rifle, 1-11 twist 30" CBI barrel. I shoot 185 Berger LRBT's with H4895. I think H4895 is over shadowed by Varget. I ran it at Blakley in August, temps were up, shot the ends fast, no issues, good accuracy, decent scores. My scores are going to get better, I'm learning the .308 and sticking with H4895. :D
