Powder Storage

Forum , I have been wondering for some time about the powder manufacturers transition from tin cans to HDPE for powder.
Does anybody know the shelf life of powder stored in HDPE compared to tin cans?
I suppose the powder type may have some bearing on this and of course the storage conditions , so I am wondering which is best for long term ?
I just lucked onto 15 pounds of RL17 and it will take me awhile to get through it and thought perhaps it might be best to decant from the HDPE jugs back into screw top old style tin powder cans.

Opinions ?

Mike.

There was a thread on here about long term powder storage.....it mentioned a red "dust" found in metal powder containers after long term storage - some sign or kind of powder deterioration IIRC that was not rust on the inside of the cans. I don't remember any problems mentioned in that thread with with long term storage in plastic.

I lost some bought new, unopened 4064 in the original tin 1# cans. It was stored in a closet away from any heat or direct light in AC for 23yrs. I found the red "dust" in it that the thread I recall had mentioned. All my other powders that were stored in plastic containers (some Accurate and Hodgdon powders) seemed fine. I converted any powder I had remaining in tin cans to plastic containers.

Leave it in the plastic jug and keep the temp steady between 60 and 80* and don't worry.

Leave it in the plastic jug and don't worry about the temperature - from minus 100 below, to way the hell over any temperature you will encounter (even in Death Valley)... it is fine.

Randy, thanks for the info on plastic jugs for powder storage. Where can one buy some new empty plastic
jugs to store their powder.

BCB sorry just threw a bunch out and used other for other projects. Hey CatShooter If you have Old Powder it might be a good Idea to shake it once in a while or you will end up with clumps. Then you might just as well throw it out.

Mike,

How many do you need? I have a stash of 1kg Vihtavouri bottles. I could bring them out Saturday or drop them off at mariners.
