powder measure

I have a RCBS uniflow and it is not consistant. I have tried to operate it the same way every time, but just not happy with it. If I put the micrometer insert in do you think it would help?

The micrometer insert just allows you more precise and repeatable powder settings...it will be no more consistent...Roger

doghntr,

It's probably your operating style, and you just need some refinement in how you throw the charges. The Uniflow is a good measure, and is pefectly capable of throwing prety consistent charges, but there are some fixes that you could incorporate. A powder baffle is one that may help. As expiper said, the mic will help you return to a given setting, but won't help with the variations. One of the big issues here is probably what Boyd touched on; powder type. If you're throwing IMR3031 and expecting it to be within +/- a tenth, forget it, it ain't gonna happen. Don't care whether you're using an unmodified Uniflow or the most expensive custom BR measure out there, that powder just isn't going to throw that uniformly.

Be as consistent as you can in every throw, from how hard you turn the drum, to how hard it stops at each end of the throw, how you grasp the handle, any side pressure you put on it during the throw, everything. If you feel something different in the throw, or feel it breaking kernals, hanging up, whatever, toss that charge back in the hopper and throw again. Guarantee you, that charge, and likely the one behind it will be significantly off the intended mark.

I have one, with the micrometer insert, sitting on my shelf. It's been there for a few years.

It was replaced by the RCBS Charge Master 1500 Combo: http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=rc98923

I've had more fun reloading, since I acquired it.

This Might Help = Clean all parts With break Cleaner ,Internal Parts may Have A protective Coating from Factory or Other Build up junk !

I agree with Kevin keep everything as uniform as possible, I would throw light and trickle up on a tuned Balance beam scale or one of the new precise electronic scales like the Sartorius GD503, short range BR guy's get away with throwing I still weigh every load on everything I shoot except pistols, my 30-30 Lever rifle, and my old smoke poles ;)
Wayne.

I also have and use the RCBS Uniflow measure. Great measure, for ball powder, not for any extruded like Varget, H4895, etc. Too much variation of charges when you have to cut the kernals & you get resistance. The main reason so many are using the electronic measures.

dito above, i find that the force of the handle at to stop, top and bottom will "shake down" the powder to some degree, thus if this "klunk" as the handle stops at top of rotation and bottom of rotation, the powder, stick or ball will settle into the drop measure, or into the hopper below the baffle, (you should have a baffle") with less or more compaction as the force of stop changes.

I have two for years and they are very good measure when used carefully, I also have two Lyman/culver measures which are only slightly better.

Practive you movement and stay with the smaller short stick or ball -4195, 3031,4064 are difficult 4895 not bad, short stick hodgdens are good.

Well, like others have already said, it's just the way they is,,
Any powder charger like that is going to be the same.
Tips;
*Mount the handle the other way. Just take the screws out and set the handle so it drops the charge on the down stoke. It's just easier for the hand to work that way.
*Drop the charge light and trickle up to the desired weight. It's what alot of folks do,,

I also use a uniflow and as the others have stated I too keep the charge light and trickle up to the desired charge weight

With a constantly good technique you can throw charges within .02 tenths as long as you have a smooth constant style.I have used a uniflow for over 20 years and it is a wonderful tool.

Perhaps you need a goal to shoot at.

Sometimes people have unrealistic expectations.
Most of these powder measures are very consistent if used carefully.

See:

For some actual accuracy tests using the Hornady. The RCBS is every bit as good as the hornady.
