Powder/ load recomendation for light bullet/fast twist.

I just got back from a prairie dog hunt. All of my guns are loaded up with fast twist barrels... and 105 grain 6 mm...140gr 6.5....etc. Looking to try some 55 grn balistic tips and/or 58 gr Vmax in my dasher and/or my 6-47L for short-range. There is only one load in the dasher sticky with 60 grain bullets and they are recommending h335. Anyone have any powder recommendation or load data for very light bullets in a 1-8 Twist Barrel in in a dasher and a 6 by 47 Lapua?

Give Reloder 10x a try. I use it with great success in .223, and hear good things about it in big varmint cartridges.

Be careful about blowing up those light bullets with that twist and velocity.

Well..I loaded up some 55 NBT's and 58 VMaxes with H335 in my dasher and some 65VMax and 70 gr NBT's over Varget in my 6-6.5-47. I'll shoot simple two shot groups to start the testing. We will see how these bullets react out of 1-8 twist tubes.

Well, I finally got out to do a little testing. I tried the 55 NBT and 58 Vmax/ H335 in one of my 1-8 Dasher tubes with about 800 rounds through it. The NBT's shot fair, but the Vmaxes didn't. I also tried 70 NBT's and 65 Vmaxes over Varget in my (1500 rounds) 1-8 6-47L. The NBT's shot OK, but the 65s shot bad and at the upper charge levels blew up!! I will give the 70's a better workout, since I only shot 2 shot groups, and maybe try the 75 Vmaxes, also. No chrono numbers as of yet.

I guess since I havent seen any other threads out there on this topic (that I could find)I figured I would post my results.

Thanks,
Tod

Round two test.
Loaded 20 of the most promising with my 6-47L......40 gr Varget under a 70 NBT. Best 3 shot group was just under 1/2 inch...on up to just under 1 inch. Dissapointing, but still MOPD at 300!! Also ran a test with the 75 gr V max over Varget......didn't get to target!!!

Also tested my Dasher again....the most promising was 37.5 H335 and 55 NBT The first two out of the gun were at 3/4, so I sent all down in the same group..stayed at 3/4. I also tried some 65 V max over H335. this looked much more promising...well as far as TWO shot groups go, anyway..... Started at 33.5 and tested up to 36. 34 and 34.5 were both pretty much same hole, 35 opened up BIG, and 35.5 and 36 did not make it to the target!!!!

Looks like the V-Max bullets are more frangeable than are the Nostler Balistic Tips. NONE of my tests with EITHER gun were successfull in getting the V-Max to target at the upper end of the velocity scale..

What I SHOULD have done was to bring some of my proven 105/108 loads to test also..just not that bright, I guess!! Going to try another Dasher test with the 65 VMAX / 34 grain H335 load....I'll try the heavies then.

When I built my 243a 8tw I ask about running the 55s and 58s. Everybody said the nbts could take the torque but the small v-maxes and blitz kings couldn't.

Tod,

I've shot a pile of PD's with 55 or 70 grain Noslers or Sierras in my Dashers, but all with 12 or 14 twists though, but shouldn't matter.

AA-2460 works fine, meters like water for volume loading, and is generally cheaper than others. I run 36.2 grains with moly 70 gr Sierra Blitzkings.

Other Dasher loads I've shot that work well.

VV-133 fireforming load 32.4 grains with 55 BT's.

VV-133....35 grains with 55 gr BT's.

W-W 748.....38.8 with 70 BT's.

I found VV-133 too fast for anything over 70 grains.

You guys who are running the 87 VMAX in your Dasher/6-47l with a 1 - 8 or faster........are you using the same powders you use to push the 105 class pills, or do you use something faster? I have lots of RL15/Varget for the Dasher, and I have a pile of H4350 for my 6-47L!!!
