powder for 223 that won't ruin case necks when using case activated measures

1-9 twist. I purchased a reloading book with specific loads for what i need and am having good results as far as accuracy. Where im having trouble is the case activated powder measure will actually bind up on (imr-4046) and cause excessive pressure on the case. Often ruining the case mouth. I use re-15 for my 308 and don't have this issue but i'm not sure if its because the case itself is stronger. Can anyone reccomend a powder with a lower tensile strength for lack of a better way of putting it. Reloading with a hornady lock n load ap progressive. Thanks, nick.

Are you using 4064?

Well, try anything....it will work. H4895, Benchmark, Varget, TAC, 748, 760, RL15, and, and, and..........

4064 is a pretty coarse-grained powder to be loading in any 224 cal cartridge on a progressive. I'm not surprised that you're having problems with it. 4064's long powder kernals have to be sheared by the drum of the Hornady powder measure as each charge is dispensed, and the case necks simply aren't up to the task of doing the job.

Logic dictates using a powder of much finer size, like H322 or IMR 8208, or any suitable ball powder.

Any small neck case will have this problem including the .308 necks as well. You have to use nothing but small kernal powder with most if not all progressive's. What does hornadys instruction book say?

yes. im sorry 4064. the re-15 is about the same shape but kernals shear much easier. I am pretty new to reloading yet so i don't know which powders would be of a finer grain. mainly shooting 69 grain. from what i read its the heaviest that the rifling i have will stable. So far its been shooting great.

H335 and ball-C#2 are two powders taht work well in my rifle and would meter easily. Your powder die should work off the shoulder not the neck I believe. Maybe a little bevel in the die would let the case center so that it doesn't wreck the necks.

I use Win 748 for 68's & 69's, and AA2520 for 75's & up. H335 has also given good results in my 223.
I like Varget but its been hard to find lately.
