Powder for .223, 308 and 9mm

I am brand new to this and was told to get Accurate 2230 for my .223 and .308 loads and Winchester 231 for my 9mm, but everyone is out of stock. Any suggestions on substitutes would be appreciated......Tony

You still won't find much powder available anywhere.

Depending on your intended use and bullet, the following will work for 9mm.
Win 231/Hodgdon HP-38 (same powder)
Hodgdon Titegroup (personal favorite)
Power Pistol
VV N320
Winchester Auto-comp
700x
800x
Hodgdon HS-6
Ramshot SILHOUETTE
Solo 1000
Unique
Universal Clays

Best suggestion look at Imr website and go to the reload data center. Find what bullets you are going to shoot. Look at the Powders available for them. Make a list of the ones will work for the loads. Then start looking or going to the suppliers and when you see a component
you can pick it up. atleast you can start shooting till the powder market cools down a bit. I dont see that happening till first of the year.

For 9mm and many other handgun loads, UNIQUE. It pretty much fills the case; no chance of double loads. For 308 win, I used IMR 4895 with very good results. I now use IMR 8208 xbr, with a bit better results. Your rifle, bullet, powder, case , primer, and preparation of the cartridge, all play a part! Enjoy the world into which you are entering!

My only experience with the ammo on your list is with the .223. I load either Hodgdon H335 or Hodgdn CFE223. Consistent accuracy for ground squirrels out to 300 yards + so I've never needed to try anything else.

Tony,
Where are you located? Perhaps if you clue us in, some folks in your area might have better ideas or might even be able to help you out. And Handgun powders are different than rifle powders so there might be some help available in those areas as well.

Best possible advice for today's state of affairs. I have a 3x5 card listing, by caliber, all the powders that have a load listed for them on the Mfr's site. Also have used Lee 2nd addition to fatten the list.

When I get low, I start carrying the card as I go into gun stores, outfitters, etc. Also consult it when I scan the list of powders on various sites that show stock. The key is to STRIKE when you find something you can use. Procrastinate and someone else will score.

Then it's all a matter of working up a load that will utilize whatever you were able to score.

223 - Varget, IMR/H 4895, H335, Benchmark - all work very well for me.

308 - Varget, IMR/H 4895, IMR 4064 - all have worked very well for me

+1 what K22 Said
add TAC and RL15 to 223
and BLC(2) and RL15 to .308 for me please.
Will probably be chastised but Alliant Bullseye or WST for pistol... If you use BE PLEASE be very careful and attentive to not double charge!!! BAD Things can happen quick with BE.
Mostly your Bullet choice (weight) will tell you the best powders for that application.
Good Luck to you,
Cheers,
Doc

The answer to your questions can be found in a quality reloading manual. Lyman's is a great one and it will certainly provide you with great info.

I loaded thousands of 45s with Win 231 back when I was shooting USPSA/IPSC, and I also blew one up with it.

Win 213 is a great clean fast powder but it does not fill the case and you can double charge with it, and if you do you are going to blow up your pistol. If I hadn't been wearing shooting glasses I'd probably have lost at least one eye.

For a beginner I'd suggest you use something like Unique that you can't double charge.

I lucked out today. Went to 10 Ring in Houston and they just got a box of Accurate 2230 in about 2 hours before I showed up....They also had the HP38 as well. Does anyone know there's any reloading classes in the Houston area?

Lyman is the best manual I've ever seen especially for a beginner - not only explains what to do but why.
