Powder for 221FB

Well guys, I decided to start with AA1680 and Reloder 7. First of all, I was disappointed with the combination of my Savage Axis's failure to feed the small cartridges through the magazine and the piece of crap front rest I was forced to use. I started with the Sierra 40gr HP and AA1680 and you could tell by my groups I was not working with a stabile platform. By time i got to shooting the Sierra 53gr HP with Reloder 7 I got use to the set up and my groups went from 1 MOA to .5 MOA. I know without a doubt my groups will improve when I switch action and stock. Sure wish I could download or upload pics here!

No earth-shattering groups, but decent varmint accuracy from a light barreled weapon....my CZ 527 American in 221FB. Almost all of my shooting is ground squirrels and rockchucks, and this combination launches the rats quite well, and anchors even the largest chucks I've encountered during walkabouts.

This was shot during RL-7, 40gr NBT load workup:

Not a bench rifle for sure, taken during the load workup day. Scope is a Leupold VX2 4-12X with LR Duplex reticle.

The rifle shoots good enough for what I use it for, so have not tried some of the other suitable powders, but as I've got a bunch of 1680 on hand for my Hornets, it looks promising from what you all have experienced.

I have been using AA1680 and AA2200 for my fireball, and it likes both. However I have tried RL7, Little gun, imr4227 and H4198 with no luck! Have not tried any of VV133 but I know a guy who has used VV130 and VV120 with some luck. The only issue with 2200 is it burns a bit dirty-but it shoots very well. I really love this little round!

Dan, I tried Lil'Gun and at 15grs I was seeing pressure issues. All 5 rounds shot had deep craters, 4 of them had primer pocket failure and the last created heavy bolt lift. I pulled down the remaining 10 rounds and measured each charge, they were all 15.0grs. I use a RCBS 1500 Charge Master and a RCBS 750 to double check all my charges. I have a McGowen SS 24" 12 twist barrel. So far the Reloder 7 has been my best powder used.

I used to shoot Lil'Gun with the 40g Sierra. Accurate and fast. Wish I still had it.

Under the rifle sections for 221FB, I don't see any for H110/W296 but if you look under pistol:
in Hodgdon Annual Manuals as well as my old Speer Manual (#12) they list H110 for various weight bullets.

If the SAMI pressure is 52,000 CUP, does that apply to both rifle & pistol?

Just curious...

Thx

Yup... the XP-100 is only a pistol by ATF definition - ballistically, it is a short barreled rifle.
