Powder Container

Was drifting in my own mind last night and looking at my supplies. Has anyone else combined single pounds into one larger container? Reason asking, got several different 1# containers of all the same lot# and wanted to clean up the cabinet by putting them all in a single 8# jug... if I can source an empty container to use it.

has anyone found a container to do something like this or know where to source an empty 8# jug or even a 4# jug?

I bought a plastic jug for used oil collection. It has one large lid for pouring powder in and a small one for pouring it out. As CJ6 said, make sure it's labeled correctly.

I've consolidated 1# bottles of the same powder/lot # into fewer 1# bottles, seems like the Hodgon bottles will hold about 1.5# just short of the opening, and the Accurate powder bottles will do the same. This eliminates one bottle on the shelf/cabinet. I've used empty 1# bottles to hold powder coming from an 8# jug to make it easier to handle that particular powder, and this old 1# bottle is not the same powder. I just wrap this 1# bottle with blue painters tape and label it with the correct contents.

I don,t do that. There is nothing wrong with the jug it came in Tommy Mc

I don’t do that, but if I did I’d be sure the ‘plastic’
Is compatible with powder
It's 748 Winchester powder and the plastic looks exactly like that powder jugs are made from, there’s some nasty stuff in used oil too. It's been in it 10 years and seems to be fine. I shot some not very long ago.
I did it because it's a lot easier to dump a powder measure through that large opening.

You can put 2.4lbs into a 1lb container. I do that

justpassinthrough could you tell me where to find that jug? I have a paper drum of green dot that i want to put the powder in something less apt to absorb moisture or get damaged. There seems to be more than a gallon of the green dot

I believe I found this one at Walmart but I haven't seen one like it in a long time. You might find something you could use at an auto parts store or ask around for an empty 8 pound plastic powder jug. Here’s a picture. It’s so nice having the large opening to dump a measure.

You need to consider that NFPA 495 requires that Smokeless Powder stored in residences must be in the original container. This could effect your fire insurance coverage in the event of a fire.

A guy I know has a bunch (like close to a couple hundred pounds) of powder at his house. He asked a friend who's some sort of higher up in the fire department if he should do anything special in terms of storage.

The guy said "make sure you store it together so that, if it goes up, it all goes up. No evidence of wrongdoing that way."

Unless that individual is an insurance inspector what he said is BS. If he is an insurance inspector he is wrong.

50lbs is the maximum that can be stored in residence.

You missed the word "legally" in the last sentence.

The above reference to 50lbs storage should have read ""50lbs is the maximum that can be stored in a residence in compliance with NFPA 495."

Just ask around your shooting/reloading friends or even at the range. I'm sure most folks would be glad to give you an empty 4 or 8 lb empty container. Just be sure to label it complete with lot number. I sometimes use a one lb container to refill my measures. Easier than holding an 8 lb to top off a measure.

As you use up the big jug does the extra air space (like 2 pounds left in an 8 pound jug) cause any concern?
I understand that the jug is sealed when the lid is screwed back on but I only load what I am going to shoot at one sitting.... That means the larger 8 lbs jugs get opened and closed alot.... I do keep my old one pound jugs and when my large jugs get down to the bottom of middle I do dump it into my one pound jugs and seal them up.... It may just mean I am a pack rat and should start throwing away empty bottles.... The one pound jugs also work great for storing buckshot and loose bird shot because it's alot but not to heavy...
